Beats Studio

Total Freedom from Wires

The world’s most famous headphone has been completely redesigned and reimagined. The new Beats Studio is lighter, sexier, stronger, and more comfortable, with precision sound, Adaptive Noise Canceling, a 20-hour rechargeable battery, and RemoteTalk. It has all the energy and excitement you expect from Beats, plus a powerful, reengineered sound.

Features

Feel Your Music

The Beats Acoustic Engine makes your listening experience intimate, personal, and real. Our signature DSP software is designed to generate the emotional experience that Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, and some of the music industry’s greatest rock, hip-hop, pop, electronic, and R&B producers want you to feel. This is how music would sound if the artist could play it back for you in person.

Put the World on Mute

Silence the noise from your daily commute or the drama from your loud neighbors with our no-compromise dual-mode Adaptive Noise Canceling. When you’re listening to music, ANC automatically strikes a balance between your music and the world outside. If you only want to use the headphone to cancel external noise, ANC only mode automatically increases the level of noise cancellation, for a quieter world.

What Batteries?

Dead batteries can kill your vibe in a flash. The New Beats Studio fixes this with a 20-hour rechargeable battery. To prevent wasting energy, the Auto On/Off feature turns off the headphone when you unplug, and with the visible Battery Fuel Gauge, you always know how much juice is available. Forget specialized adapters; the New Studio can be charged via micro USB almost anywhere.

Lighter, Stronger, and More Comfortable

When we reimagined our legendary headphone, we designed it like a beautiful sports car and made disciplined choices. We streamlined the New Beats Studio with fast curves, smooth surfaces, and no visible screws. We shaved 13 percent off the original weight and gave it a lighter, stronger, and more comfortable headband. We created softer ear cups and an ergonomic bellow to create a flexible, custom fit for every head shape, so you can keep your music all to yourself.

Don't buy, not built to last. Bought in late December from Apple.. It's now mid February and left earpiece padding has delaminated, exposing the foam and a crack has developed in the right part of the headband next to the earpiece

I'm just going to get this out of the way: these headphones do not produce accurate sound and their sound quality is easily trumped by a $200 pair of Sennheiser or AKG headphones. Then again, Beats have never, ever been about producing an accurate sound. Marketing aside, the Studio line of Beats headphones has always been about reproducing a live concert environment where the bass and highs are turned way up. This dynamic compression is common with many rock concerts. Go to a Rob Zombie show where the bass moves your clothes and the guitars are piercing, that's what the Beats Studio have always tried to do.

These are the new 2013 models and they are vastly improved over the previous editions. They are sturdier, look much better (the matte black make me look like a kid about to go to a rave or a DMX concert), the sound quality has been drastically improved (it's actually more balanced), and the Bluetooth wireless performance has been great for me with my iPhone 5 (iOS 7.0.4), iPad mini (iOS 7.0.4), and 2012 15" MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.1).

I'll start with the design. Beats has implemented a design that hides all the screws. This means that they shouldn't be unscrewing themselves and falling out like the previous Studio model. Beats have retained the plastic-heavy design along with a thing headband pad but these look sleeker. They also don't stick out from the sides as much as the first Studio models. The inclusion of matte black (and even matte titanium) mean that everyday people can buy these. Beats still offers their standard glossy black color for the younger crowd. Fortunately, the obnoxious green, pink, yellow, and red colors are gone from the wireless Studio headphones. I'm OK with bright color and headphones but not for huge cans like these.

Since my family now owns both Bose QC25s (wife's in White/Khaki) and Beats Studio Wireless headsets (mine in Matte Black), I feel like I can finally write a completely informed review and comparison test between the two. I am also a headphone/earbud nut that owns the now defunct Logitech Ultimate Ears Active Noise Canceling UE9000s and eight decent quality earbuds and I have a brother that owns several products that I don't. I have spent weeks comparing and sampling many of these products so I can give you the best review that I'm capable of writing.

Testing procedure – while it's not scientific I spent a lot of time with these products listening to a wide array of music. I left the headsets on my head for hours on end while exercising, doing household chores and flying across the country on commercial airlines. Also, it took me two weeks to write this review as I continued to test and compare the Bose and Beats with a huge library of music that ranged from Eminem to Emmylou Harris.

I didn't test the headphones with lossless audio or vinyl records playing through analog tube amps. I used an iPad, iPhone and a couple of different iPods as audio sources since that's what the majority of us use these days. The songs are Apple AAC files sampled at 256 kbps.

I'm going to cover every detail that I can think of since good research is imperative before dropping $300+ on headphones. Let's get started...

BUILD QUALITY
(Winner) Bose QC-25 – The materials that Bose uses in the construction of the QC25s are absolutely first class. The plastic feels solid and the aluminum feels like it was intended for use in an aerospace project and the padding on the head band is thick padded velour. One issue is the fabric used on the top of the headband.

As is widely known, Beats are extremely overpriced for the quality you get in return. With that known, the wired version of the studio's are frankly a silly buy in my opinion, you can get much more bang for the buck elsewhere. For 300$, you are really getting a 150$ pair of headphones, albeit, with the beats logo if you need that.

But when it comes to Bluetooth quality over the ear headphones, the options are not as numerous so it does make these a bit more sensible. Their main competitor is probably the bose ae2w and in comparing it to them, I enjoy the fit better, they don't have a silly mic extension sticking out and they sound better, noticeably better. It's still quite the hike up in price for them but again, if looking for a Bluetooth headset of some decent quality, it is easier to swallow that price hike.

I do like the case and accessories and was a big fan of the black matte finish. While they do feel solid, I do wish they weren't as plastic-ey as the are. For the price paid, they should have a more premium construction/look to them. I also was disappointed they don't multipair or have any sort of mutli device memory function. From what I can tell, you need to re-pair with devices each time when switching. The anc does produce a slight hiss and yes, it's not in the same stratosphere as the bose anc. But in this argument, I personally side with the quality sound of the beats over the anc of the bose. The parrot wireless model do sound better but that look and feel chased me away pretty quick, the fit was horrendous.

The big sell here is wireless. Had they not been, which the 300$ studio's are, they would not have held any personal appeal.
