Great DVD - Great Value,
By Stephen J. Hegedus (New Kensington, PA USA) - See all my reviews

I saw some of Beattie Outdoor Productions work at the 2010 Fly Fishing Film Tour so I decided to order the DVD Nervous Water. First off, it's nice to see quality films like these being made about fly fishing. Much better and more entertaining than the so-called outdoor shows you see on TV that run more like an infomercial about various gear or a certain lodge.
Nervous Water has plenty of content. It includes 4 feature length films, 10 short films, and an extended highlight cut with music and no commentary. Although there is lots of good stuff here, the feature "First Descent" was the highlight of the DVD for me. RA and another guide document a float trip down an entire river system in Alaska. They are the first people to float down the whole river system and they fish for all of the various fish species inhabiting different sections of the river, including northern pike near the end. The film gives you an idea of how different sections of the river are important to the various species that live there, and how they each utilize their niche. But there is more to the DVD than just Alaska, there is a feature on Slovenia, there is some trout in Colorado, Saltwater, etc. So, the settings are varied and so is the action and the target species. There are some interesting zip line and crane shots in the movie. I didn't know what they were until I watched the "making of First Descent" portion of the DVD - which was yet another cool feature. Interesting shots like that can add variation and a fresh angle on the same old thing - in this case a fishing video - but they are not overdone. This is a DVD I would highly recommend, if for nothing else than for the quantity of material here, but the quality of the film is great, too.

I saw this video and was highly disapointed. I don't care about hiking and visiting villages. I want to see time on the water and technics to catch the fish. I would love to have been able to return it. I wanted to see flies uses for false albacore and stripers. I wanted to see casting technics and whatever else is needed to catch the species listed. I am just a different kind of veiwer I guess. I like to watch a video that will show me what I need to know and do to put fish on the bank or boat. A good laugh and scenery is ok, but show me what it take to entice, hook, and land that special fish. I guess I have to make my own video and publish it. I am a fly fisherman, guide, and trainer for fly fishing technics and tying. I learned nothing as far as what I need to do to catch the fish shown. I wanted to learn about catching some reds and maybe speckled trout, and albies. I must say they caught some good fish and had a great time. Good footages for those who likes to see people travel and catch fish, and veiw photo opportunities.

For sheer fishing footage, this can't be beat. I think there is about 3 hours of video on one disc. There are some real unique scenes in here like fly fishing for tuna and fly fishing for a native trout and grayling in slovenia. The tuna part has to be my favorite and i think most who dream of fishing in cool places will like this scene too. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to watch a ton of fish get caught in cool places and doesn't want a how to video.
