5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's we've bought in years., March 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Beaupre's Home (Audio CD)
***** My wife and I had the pleasure of hearing "Hart Rouge" in concert before purchasing "Beaupre's Home". The CD is unquestionably, one of the finest we've bought in years! This Canadian group is a rare find in the world of music. They are exceptional! Their music is "real", it has "roots", and is extremely well performed, well recorded, clean, and very passionate. The bongo played by Michel Dupire is so deep and stunning it literally moves you. Acoustic instruments are sharp, clean and well defined, Uilleann pipes and electric guitar played by Davy Gallant add dimension beyond explanation. Finally, the very best of this CD are the vocals and harmonies performed by sisters Michelle, Suzanne and brother Paul. Their vocies will literally send tingles up and down your spine. "Hart Rouge" is an extraordinarily talented Canadian group.. If you like Acadian, Louisiana, and multi-cultural music, don't pass up this CD. Dave & Bobbie Morrow

5.0 out of 5 stars We were lucky enough to see them in concert., November 7, 2000
This review is from: Beaupre's Home (Audio CD)
We were lucky enough to see Hart Rouge in concert...an incredible experience. Each member is a uniquely talented vocalist, but the tight harmonies of their "sibling sound" are indescribable. As a group they are diverse, switching flawlessly between French and English, fast and slow, and even throwing in a heart-felt and haunting Spanish ballad. They hold true to their French-Canadian roots, singing a selection of folk songs and Acadian chants. They make unique use of instrumental accompainant...the best of which is the percussion rhythm of Paul's cowboy boots!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonder found by chance, May 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Beaupre's Home (Audio CD)
When I found this beautiful CD I thought I was taking a chance in buying it but wanted to get something sung in French (a few of the songs on Beaupre's Home are in French, translated in the notes). By now I've listened to this CD over a hundred times. You can hear the touch of the instruments. You can hear the lyrics, in English, French, and Micmac, the latter two translated in the notes. You can hear the lovely voices individually, blending when they should, separating wonderfully when they should. I wish I could think of a better way to describe this high praise: the music is not over-produced. A couple of the songs are traditional. (They do a traditional French song sung by the McGarrigle Sisters; Hart Rouge's arrangment is arguably better.) The original songs are haunting, with a kind of existential lyricism. If I had to choose ten of my CDs to keep, Beaupre's Home would be one of them. It's one of the happiest purchases of any kind I have ever made. I can hardly wait until they put out another CD.

Album notes
Personnel includes: Suzanne Campagne, Michelle Campagne (vocals); Paul Campagne (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass); Davy Gallant (acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, Uillean pipes, background vocals); Michel Dupire (berimbau, bass drum, djembe, percussion).
Producers: Suzanne Campagne, Michelle Campagne, Paul Campagne, Davy Gallant, Michel Dupire.
Magnificent intricate anticipatory harmony vocals that only come from years of singing together, enhanced by the fact that they are by Paul, Michelle, and Suzanne Campagne, two sisters and a brother. Each voice is a distinct entity -- Paul's is smooth, Michelle's soaring and swooping, and Suzanne's rich and sensual. These voices are backed by some stellar instrumentation and augmented by the moving arrangements. The songs are sung in both French and English, reflecting the polarity of growing up in one of the only French-speaking communities in western Canada. They give a nod to their Cajun roots with a hauntingly beautiful version of Zachary Richard and Brian Stolz's "Sunset on Luisianne."

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm and Wonderful, July 17, 2009

Hart Rouge is a French-Canadian group with a trio of siblings at its core: Paul, Michelle, and Suzanne Campagne, augmented by Davy Gallant and Michel Dupre. With voice, percussion, and assorted guitars, they make music that draws you right in and holds you spellbound. If you listen to the first three or four cuts on Beaupre's Home, chances are you'll be hooked. Performing both original tunes and songs by writers as diverse as Nanci Griffith and Zachary Richard, the group makes every cut sound like its own. Like the music, the recorded sound is full, rich, and dynamic. This is a warm, wonderful CD, and I only hope it gets the attention it deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hart Rouge - Beaupre's Home, October 7, 2008

I bought this cd after hearing one of its tracks (A La Claire Fontaine) on our local classic music station. It was so hauntingly beautiful, I was hooked straight away. I couldn't buy it locally (I live in Australia), but I was able to buy it on Amazon. I play it often, and enjoy it more each time. If you like folk music, or even rhythm and blues, this cd may appeal to you also. There are traditional style folk songs, as well as songs which tell stories of the times - some are quite blunt, and even sad, but for me, all are good. I would recommend this cd to anyone wanting music that is just that little bit different.
