If you've never heard Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traore, definitely check her out. Her earlier work (especially 98's Mounessa) blended traditional Malian instruments in subtly unconventional ways, and each successive album has found Rokia ever more adventurous in her approach. "Beautiful Africa" is no exception. Unlike the rest, this one can rightly be described as a Rock album, with electric guitar and solid drumming providing a somewhat aggressive backbone to Rokia's otherwise delicate, hypnotic songs. The tracks here are consistently excellent, although it is admittedly a highlight to hear the Rokia's typically soft vocals grow downright fiery in songs like "Kouma" and the title track. Still, the lighter moments are wonderful as well, such as the grooving "Ka Moun Ke" and closer "Sarama."

One of the best albums I've heard this year, though listeners familiar with Rokia's talent shouldn't be surprised at this. Hopefully it will get the attention it deserves.

Highly recommended.

This is a good album if you are starting to try or already have an interest in "World Music". It is a very high 3 1/2 stars. If you are familiar with the Putumayo Label of world music and wish the cd's/albums were more "cohesive" & "consistent" and a little less obviously "commercial" this is a recording for you. It is interesting that the music is in three languages ( French, English, and Bambara). The liner notes include the lyrics. I enjoy it, but if you are trying Ms. Traore for the first time, I suggest you try her album "Tchamantche ", it is definitely a 4 star.

I heard her interviewed on NPR. I had not heard of her previously altho I consider myself a devotee of Mali music. I lived there for 4 years and have quite a nice collection. I was proud to add her to it, and recommend her to others!

I was completely ignorant of Malian music until recently, when I read about da'esh terrorists taking over Timbuktu and forcing the cancellation the Festival au Desert. So it was this bunch of haters who piqued my interest in the Malian music scene, and I've been a fan ever since. Rokia Traoré's album now occupies a space in my mp3 player, with the lively "Tuit Tuit" being my favorite track. I look forward to listening to more material from Mme. Traoré and the many other brilliant musicians from a country that deserves more attention and respect.

This is the first Rokia Traore album I owned but it persuaded me to buy all her other albums. This is a must for anyone interested in world music.

I have all of Rokia's albums and enjoy them all. I was fortunate to see her live at Stanford and was amazed at what an electric performance she gives. On stage she had the crowd screaming for more, very fun event. Each album seems to get better but this is the first to allow her on stage persona to shine through. I am a fan of many African musicians and I love much of what is thought of as African music but I think she is from Mali but doing Rokia music. She is unlike any others who come to mind, a genre unto herself.
