From the Back Cover

Where is God in the midst of this? You’ve probably heard that question or perhaps asked it yourself. In the battle for your joy, your marriage, your finances, your health, an emptiness creeps in. Where is the peace You promised, God?

Bo Stern has been there—and is still there. Yet in studying the battles in Scripture, she came to a startling conclusion: God is using these fierce fights in our lives for an astonishing purpose.

About the Author

Bo Stern knows the most beautiful things can come out of the hardest times. Her Goliath came in the form of her husband’s terminal illness, a battle they are still fighting with the help of their four children, a veritable army of friends, and our extraordinary God. Bo is a teaching pastor at Westside Church in Bend, Oregon.

In "Beautiful Battlefields," Bo Stern doesn't just write about life-changing, hope-producing perspective -- she documents her discovery and application of these truths -- from the "Front Lines" of her family's current, and very difficult, fight of their lives: her husband's ALS illness. She tells her story, and opens up the journey of her own heart, with equal parts of both brutal honesty and overcoming, bright hope, inspiration and suuuper practical, simple application for "fighting strategies." Though her husband's illness establishes the story in a dramatic, heart-wrenching setting, Bo urges each of us to not compare our battles, but instead, recognize our own battles for the difficult, challenging situations they are, and to find the transformational beauty, and the transformational Person that awaits us in the midst of them. With a writing voice that is riveting, sometimes humorous, transparent, and deeply touching, Bo gives us a treasure-book, power-packed with real solutions and the singular foundation of a God that is with us and for us. For all battlefields, past, present and future.

There are times in most of our lives when things happen of such magnitude, even our loudest screams are frozen in silence. Nothing comes out because there is simply no way to express the fear, the pain, the grief. Bo Stern puts words to the mute state we often find ourselves in on the battlefield of life. Not only does Bo express the inexpressible, she divides the spoils mined from the the depths of her own personal experiences with us by offering antidotes to help us begin to breath again. As oxygen begins to flow again, the most remarkable thing begins to unfold; beauty! Right in the midst of our battlefields, we find ourselves looking around, blinking as the colors begin to appear on the grey canvas of our heart aches, tragedies and sorrow, with a rich and lasting beauty incomparable. You may be saying to yourself, "not possible!" And I would say, "I dare you to begin reading this book."

This is an absolute must read! It is life changing for sure! It is one of those books that you will want everyone you know to read. The author writes with such honesty and transparency, with such wisdom and insight, that you can't put it down once you start it. Even though her family is in the midst of an overwhelmingly difficult battle, you can relate no matter the battle your in. I wish I would of had this book 20 years ago. It would of made me more beautiful in my own battles, with an understanding of God and His purpose for them. This is a book that will show you the faithfulness and glory of God in a huge way. I especially loved that Bo gives the application part, or battle plans, for dealing with battles in the second half of the book. Can't recommend it enough.

With all of our differences, the one thing that we have in common is the struggle. "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle" Plato said. And all of us can identify with the deep truth of those words. The struggle might look different for each one of us, but we all know the pain, the fears, and the discouragement that the battle brings.

What I love about Beautiful Battlefields is how Bo Stern so graciously and convincingly offers us the adjective "beautiful" for whatever battlefield we personally face. Through her own story and the stories of others, she inspires us to find treasure on the battlefield just as she has done. Her words brings comfort for the weary heart and point us back to the source of everything that we need inside of a relationship with Jesus. By being raw and vulnerable with her own fears and doubts, she leads us safely around common snares that rob us of faith and straight onto the solid ground of trusting in the goodness of God.

Stern writes with an authenticity and genuineness that will make you feel safe to dive deep into the difficult issues that her book brings up. Reading her words and stories feels like sitting down to coffee with a trusted group of friends. The compassion, resolve, and hope that seems to leak off the pages from her life into ours is evidence that battlefields can indeed be beautiful. And I believe that in reading her book, you will find all the tools and encouragement you need to add "beautiful" to your own personal battlefield and the confidence to know that you are not alone in the fight.

"I have already been to every minute you will ever face. I have been to your future and back, and I have built provision in every minute where you will need it. You won't see it now, but it will be there when you get there." "God has written the Book of You and the God who knows the whole story can be trusted with the days that fill its pages, but its always tempting to pick up the pen ourselves." God has not promised us a worry-free life. What He has promised is that He goes before us and we will have everything we need at the time we need it.

In this book, Bo gives you a real life perspective of someone in the midst of a battle. This book weaves the reality of her situation, the honesty of her feelings and fears with the hope and peace that only come through trusting God with your battle.
