A Must Have For People with Chemically Relaxed Hair,
By LKW "arawandme" (Phoenix, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
I was surfing the net for a hair care book that would help me with my hair problems. I read the reviews for Beautiful Black Hair and ordered it. My hair was dry, brittle, and thinning in spots. I read Shamboosie's book and was so impressed with the information that it provided, it was hard to put it down. I finished it in one day. I ran out and purchased the products he recommended that same night and he is absolutely correct, the right products make a world of difference. I followed the formula's he recommended and saw results after the second treatment. My hair looks and feels so much better. He knocks no-lye relaxers and that's okay because I don't use it anyway. However, I do know people with very beautiful healthy hair that does. As he points out, the key to a great head of hair is conditioner, conditioner, conditioner. Definitely one of the best hair care books on the market especially for women or men with flat cell (kinky) hair.

I don't know about you Shamboosie........,

This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
I read this book completely in one night. (which is very different for me.) The book jumps all over the place with the advise. Kind of repetitive at times, but I guess he just wants us to remember key points. I agree with some of the points, but some of his advise, I find a little questionable. He stresses use of lye relaxers which I agree with, but he only recommends one. He recommends a few expensive brand products and poos other brands. Outside of the model on the cover, the other pictures of his clients hair is not all that great. They look very average and they have thin whispy looking hair. I tried his method against my better judgement. [After spending a bit of money,] my hair doesn't look any better than it did before. I hope by the time I have used all this expensive stuff I will have noticed some difference. I had to buy the Dudley creme' online through the company. I couldn't find it locally. I gave it 3 stars because he does give some great info on how hair is broken down, relaxers and heat protection.

A no nonsense book about Black Hair Care,
By A Customer
This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
I read this book and it truly changed the way I treated my hair. His program introduced at the beginning of the book should make a big difference especially if you have dry damaged hair like I did. He recommends: washing every four days for the first several weeks followed by a deep conditioner, then at least once every week from then on. He is against non-lye relaxers for very good reasons. He does recommend products that may seem expensive. I think having a good shampoo and conditioner is a must and a good investment to make. It is ok to scrimp on the other stuff. I am presently using the Nexxus Biotin shampoo and the Humectress conditioner. Honestly I am satisfied with both. I have not bought any of the Dudley products and probably will not. My hair is no longer cronically dry and my scalp is no longer dry and itchy. I mix Mane and Tail with oil and apply to my hair 1 hour before I shampoo, but I no longer oil my scalp after I shampoo. He suggest moisterising the hair and I find this to be a very valuable suggestion. For this I simply rub some Mane and Tail Conditioner (which is also a leave in cond.) in my hair every 2 days. One drawback I found was the emphasis on styling with curling irons. I don't think it is a good suggestion for people who are trying to restore their hair, whether or not they are using Dudley's products to do it. Wrapping and setting has worked for me. This is a good book for someone who needs to restore their hair. Do not worry too much about trying to buy all the products listed. If the Nexxus Shampoo and Conditioner are out of your reach then Suave makes a humectress conditioner that is really good for a fraction of the price and a corresponding shampoo as well. For the reconstructor that is a part of the regimen, I use Aphogee protein reconstructor every six weeks and has not suffered from breaking hair anymore. ... Try this book, but really, try not to buy all the products listed in it.

Mrs. America Pageant Hair!,
By Working Mom (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
Shamboosie is the ONLY hairdresser on the planet that I allow to touch my hair. This is not an exaggeration. The man knows what he's talking about and what he's doing. I loved this book. Before I read it, no matter how hard I tried, my hair would break off when it reached 4 inches in length. I asked myself if it could be true that most of the blame was in the "no-lye" relaxers and the wrong products. You can take it from me...everything he says in this book is true. (And I wasn't totally convinced until my hair grew so long that it reached the middle of my back) My hair looked GORGEOUS in the Mrs. America Pageant. (I was Mrs. New Jersey) Do yourself a favor and buy this book for yourself and anyone you know and love who's tired of wasting money on weaves, curling irons, grease and the other tools of the trade. It'll be the best investment you've ever made in your appearance. See my hair for yourself: Look at the back of the cover of my new book PRAYERS FOR THE WORKING MOM: 7 SECRETS TO PHENOMENAL SUCCESS. That's really my hair! No weaves.

THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE,
By A Customer
This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
Okay, I may be overstating it but this was one of the BEST books I've read about black hair care. I've read so many and this is the FIRST book that actually explains why we are losing our hair and what we can do to improve the health of our hair. I did the six-week plan, then I made my appointment with a beautician. What's the difference? Not only can I see a difference in the health of my own hair (no more little hairs in the sink when I comb it), I am also able to achieve almost the same result when I do my own hair. He explains how to wash, blow dry and even curl your hair. I like his simple- step by step guide to every aspect of hair care and styling. I used to admire women who could do their own hair, and I am amazed that I too am able to do my hair on those weeks I don't visit the salon. I gave this book to my sis who did the program with me as well-- and we are getting compliments on our hair wherever we go.

Pleasantly Surprised,
By Brenda Burrell (Milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
I ordered the Beautiful Black Hair book, as part of an free offer for enrolling in a book club. I was very doubtful about the promises of having longer, stronger, healthier hair with following Shamboosie's program. I purchased the suggested products and followed the conditioning program every four days. Within three weeks, I noticed a great difference in my hair. The first thing a I noticed, was my hair not shedding or falling out every time I combed it. My hair appeared softer and had a shine to it. I was so surprised!! I actually bought a product that does what it promises to do. I am sold. I have been following this program for three months. My hair is stronger, looks very healthy and is easier to manage. I receive positive comments from peers and family about the condition of my hair. Shamboosie's book is easy to read and follow. He gives real solutions, and a step by step guide towards achieving your goal. This book was very helpful and informative to me. It enlightened me on all the damage I had been doing to my hair all these years. I want to thank Shamboosie for this book, and making it available to all black women. GREAT BOOK!!

Truly a start to having beautiful black hair....,
By "misslex" (The South) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
First, I have to point out Shamboosie's belief of no-lye relaxers. I know many of us can join the No-Lye Relaxer Club: "Hi my name is ____ and I have used a No-Lye Relaxer." I have used lye relaxers in the past, and before receiving this book I made the mistake of using the No-Lye Touch Up kit on the market. After reading Shamboosie's book, I now understand why I was experiencing dryness and itching that I wasn't prior to using the no-lye touch up., Like other reveiwers I was debating between Shamboosie's book or Ms. Howse's book. I think this book was a MUCH better buy. I read Ms. Howse's review of Shamboosie's book @ http://www.ubhpublications.com/PDFs/BBH.pdf and just quickly let me point out her negative flaws of this book and my opinion:She mentioned that she didn't agree with Shamboosie reccommending Nexxus products because they are not for black hair. Maybe she sees Nexxus as a "non-ethnic" product However, as Shamboosie mentioned in his book. It's not whether the product is ethnic or not, it's the high- quality ingredients that matters. I agree. She focused intensely on the fact that we should use no-lye relaxers and it won't hurt us. However, on her site she says she uses Affirm Relaxers, I thought Affirm was a professional slaon relaxer containing lye?? I'm not saying that Ms. Howse is not correct in her findings and I'm not saying that Shamboosie is completely correct in everything he suggests. But his book is on point and has chapters on everything concerning our hair. He includes step by step instructions, product reccomendations, and a breakdown of each item that we put on our hair. I truly believe that with this book, you can grow the hair that you are losing or have lost due to improper care. I'm taking his suggestions to heart, and I'm sure that I will benefit from it.

Word To The Wise!,

This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
From the Author: MR. SHAMBOOSIEI recommend that if you really want to get the most out of your purchase of this book, read it from cover to cover. Once you learn how to care for your hair you will find that you spend a lot less. Make notes in the book, highlight full pages if you need to and write the page numbers in the front of the book. See pages 229 through 240 in the back of the book for more product recommendations. One other thing, you can trust the every word, every formula every, recommendation and most importantly, every product especially the "CONDITIONERS" can be trusted. What ever you do, don't add anything to the mix! That's what got you in trouble to start with. You can GROW beautiful healthy hair, let me show you how!!! Why Quality Hair Care Products? Trust that I have been using all of the products mentioned in this book for over 20 years, and have full knowledge of each individual product. I know what it will do for your hair, and how best to use it. I have perfected the use of every product. Please know that all conditioners are not the same simply because the names sound alike. Trust the theory instead of unprofessional opinions. Your hair will show and tell you which one works best. One more very important thing is this. Each individual product in the book was selected because of the specific job it can do for improving the overall health of your hair. Learn what each one is for, couple it with the problem it was made to correct, and watch it do its MAGIC! Each one is the very best, very special and different from everything else in its individual category. Every product was hand picked by a true professional, and would not be in my book if they did not work, and were not the best. This book was written to help you make the best decisions for your hair and especially for your Beautiful Brown Baby Girls. Don't think of the product as expensive think of it as the best, your hair will thank you many times over. Buy the book and tell your friends & family about it, they to will thank you many times over. ...

Best Hair Care Book (and Ive bought many),
This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
I bought this book two years ago and have been using the products recommended by Shamboosie for all of that time. Can I just say that if you read all of the other reviews and doubtfully pass this book over you are doing yourself a dis-service! I do not have a bad grade of hair but I was one of those folks who thought my hair had to be short to be cute. I would grow it out, lose control (as in breakage, ugly hair days, etc) and just cut it off again. I did the grow/cut cycle 5 times in 10 Years!!! Can I just say that these past 2 years have allowed me to receive compliments CONSTANTLY on my hair's health and overall look. I tell everyone that I am not sure if it is JUST the NEXXUS products but it sure could be!!! So much so, that I budget to buy these products! BUY THIS BOOK!

Not too impressed,

This review is from: Beautiful Black Hair: Real Solutions to Real Problems--A Step by Step Instructional Guide (Paperback)
I read this book about a month ago and it really did not impress me at all. First of all I do appreciate someone trying to help us with our hair problems, but this book seems more like a commercial for over priced hair products rather than a guide. Following some of his advice to buy Nexxus and Dudley products that you can only get online or in expensive salons MIGHT help you with your damaged hair problems, but it will more so contribute to your financial problems. I am too through with anything by Nexxus. After ordereding some of their vitatress products online my hair was just as bad as its ever been, maybe even worst. After shelling out about $50 dollars to the Nexxus company and faithfully following the regimes day in and day out I ended up with dry, lifeless hair and no end to my split ends. My hair was falling off and breaking off all over the place. I used the expensive Nexxus products, but it did more damage than good because I don't think they created those products for "OUR" hair textures. After I stopped using the products and with the advice of a good friend/stylist I was able to achieve healthy hair by simply...
trimming my ends once every two months waiting a full 8 weeks between lye, yes I said it lye relaxers careful not to overlap on previously relaxed hair washing and conditioning my hair every 4 to 6 days, deep conditioning every two weeks and wrapping up my hair every night with a silk scarf with these simple steps, regular beauty supply products that cost under $10 dollars and a little patience people always ask if I'm wearing a wig or a weave, but it's my own hair. Shamboosie tried, but you don't need this huge manual, just time, appreciation for your unique texture and very little money. |
