The Best Ballad For Years,
By Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beautiful (Audio CD)
After the cold reception of the first single "Dirrty" from her second album Stripped, Christina Aguilera released the song "Beautiful." The song opened 2003 in style, with a song that went straight to No.1 in the UK and became her biggest selling single to date. The song was a huge hit in Europe and in America too. The song is, simply put, just a very beautiful ballad. After the raw and explicit Dirrty, Christina did a total turnaround and came out with this absolute masterpiece. Beautiful is a firm fan-favourite from many Christina Aguilera fans, because they can relate to the song so much. Christina's vocals are absolutely stunning, the message is powerful and critics aren't joking when they call it one of the best songs ever.
Beautiful is just one example of the control and authority that Christina now has over her career. She was once a clean-cut pop singer who sang about boyfriends in a typical teenager way. She's now singing about universal topics of social acceptance and stereotypes that cause so much hatred and anger in the world. For someone like me, Beautiful is by FAR Christina's best ever composition to date. I'm one of those teenagers who doesn't listen to a song and think it's rubbish if I don't find it funky/catchy or whatever. I listen to the message, and the one that this song contains is so powerful. I can relate to it as well, which always makes me feel better about myself. Beautiful begins with a classy piano intro and Christina whispering "Don't look at me." She wails a bit, before the first verse starts. She sings, "Everyday is so wonderful, and suddenly it's hard to breathe. Now and then I get insecure, from all the pain. I'm so ashamed." The chorus is then sung as Christina's vocals gradually rise, "I am beautiful, no matter what they say. Words can't bring me down. I am beautiful in every single way. Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no. So don't you bring me down today." The beat then kicks in and the song really gets underway. The second verse follows, "To all your friends you're delirious. So consumed in all your doom. Trying hard to fill the emptiness, the pieces gone, left the puzzle undone. Ain't that the way it is?" Christina then sings the chorus once more, before the awesome and inspired bridge, "No matter what we do, no matter what we say. We're the song inside the tune, full of beautiful mistakes, and everywhere we go, the sun will always shine. And tomorrow we might awake on the other side." Christina then sings the chorus a few more times as her voice goes through the roof and sends shivers down your spine. The song then gradually dies down and she wails a bit more like she did at the start of the song and finally sings, with so much dedication and passion, "Don't you bring me down... Mmmm ...today." Then the song ends as the viola bows out gracefully, leaving the song fitting perfectly in that masterpiece 4-minute time bracket. The video to Beautiful is just a powerful masterpiece. Many stations were nervous about broadcasting it, but with the right tone and message, the world just seemed to join together and appreciate what Christina had done. Here Christina doesn't strip off. She wears all black in a bare room, and the camera focuses on those who are different, but all the same inside. A homosexual couple kissing on a bench, a thin girl looking in a mirror, a cross-dresser dressing up, a punk on a bus, a girl with braces who is beaten up in a forest and a teenage boy wanting bigger muscles all capture the spirit of the song. It's an awesome video and this song is a masterpiece.

In my opinion, this is definitely one of Christina's best songs yet. It's such a gorgeous song! This song sounds great on the radio, it's a standout track on her 2nd album "Stripped" and you just have to love it. I bet even most Christina Aguilera haters will have to admit this song is beautiful (like the title says). I used to be a Christina hater, but "Dirrty" changed my mind, and now this song makes me like her even more. Christina sings with so much meaning and you can tell she totally means what she sings. A gorgeous song, from a singer with a brilliant voice.

Regardless of what has ever been said about Christina, the girl can sing!!!!!!!! 'Beautiful' is a song that really describes itself. Christina has been dipping her toes into a lot of different genres lately, and this song is somewhat classical (as well as a bit jazzy). She pours so much heart and emotion into 'Beautiful' that even people who don't really care for Christina will love this tune. This single, however, might just be for big time Christina fans. The Spanish version of 'Get Mine, Get Yours' displays that Christina sounds brilliant regardless of the language she's singing in. The video is classic Christina (meaning different and controversial). Christina's message is simple: underneath it all, we are all equal and beautiful. I believe the UK edition of this single features 'Dirrty (the Mauve club mix),' as the b-side. Keep on goin' Christina!

"Beautiful" is the right now the best song of 2003.Christina shows her range as vocalist and spiritual she is. This song proves that she is definitely passed Britney when it comes to talent. The girl can really sing.Only flaw is that its not long enough but still a great song.

Without Question The Best Song She's Ever Had,

"I am beautiful". It's a pretty simple statement when typed by me on my computer. But when this simple phrase comes out of the mouth of a Miss. Christina Aguilera, it is escalated to more than three words. It is a phrase, a message, a state of mind. Christina seems to be the pop star people love to hate. The conservatives complain she's sexual, profane, and vulgar (which she sometimes is). People dismiss her as an industry puppet, bubblegum pop trash, a poser. In a word- no. Aguilera is in my opinion not only the best teen pop singer out there, she is the most amazing person ever to grace the music industry, and one of the most amazing to grace the earth. And no, I'm not just saying this because of the kiss in the video :). When she sings, "I am beautiful" I swear it's like a message from the almighty Lord himself. Yes, I know I sound like I'm exagerrating. Too bad. I'm not. Yes, not everyone is going to love this song as much as I do, some people won't even like it that much. But for anyone to dismiss this song as garbage as one reviewer did here, they have obviously been deprived of a working heart. Here's to Christina Aguilera. May she continue to inspire us for many years to come.

What a wonderful song this is. Christina Aguilera sings with such conviction and the video is stunning, showing people who are often seen as different and therefore not acceptable to society.I don't normally like such slow moving songs but in this case I will make a willing exception. The words are incredibly touching I mean there are not many songs tell you to be happy with whom you are they? Most songs are about "perfect" people but the real word doesn't have perfect people and Christina's song reflects this right down to its lyrics. Beautiful!

This Album (STIPPED) of Christina Aguilera, is more than excellent, because all the songs that she wrote are so good that i will listen the cd millions of time. All the songs from the interludes up to keep singing my song are amusing. if i have to rete her cd i will give her ten stars. Moreover this album show the differents mood or frame of mind, the profesionality, spirit, her voice and more caracteristics that she have. I hope that she keep on singing like that and doing the things that she do up to now, Christina never change.

Beautiful lives up to it's title,

I love Christina Aguilera, not only is she beautiful she is also talented and not affraid to speak her mind. I am glad that Christina chose Beautiful as the second single off of Stripped. I think that this single backs up the fact that Christina has a range to her that other pop stars do not have. This song is exactly what the title says, Beautiful. I think that it sends out a very positive message to people from all walks of society, and I also love how the video, which is included on the cd, brings the lyrics of the song to life. Overall, I highly recommend Beautiful to everyone.

An aural self-esteem booster,

I originally thought that Christina (or Xtina as she was known at the time) made a big mistake by releasing Dirrty as the first single from her second album Stripped. The song is fun, but the sexually charged, somewhat bizarre video alienated her pop fanbase and words like skank were hurled at Christina. Now I see she knew what she was doing by releasing Beautiful as the second single.
Here's a little background on how the song came to be for those who don't know. Former frontwoman for 4 Non Blondes (remember What's Up?) Linda Perry wrote the song to cheer herself up after struggling with low self-esteem and self-doubt. Years later she met Christina Aguilera at a club and advised her to use the depression she was going through to fuel her second record. Christina later called Linda and asked her to help pen some songs together. To break the ice, Linda played a bit of Beautiful and Christina fell in love with it. Linda turned her down when she asked to include it on Stripped. She'd planned on keeping the song to herself and someday releasing it on an album of her own. She gave in after hearing Christina's stunning acapella rendition, but put her foot down when it came to Aguilera's well known runs, belts, and Mariah-ish finger waves. She kept in all the vocal cracks and choppy notes to prove that while perfection doesn't exist, true beauty is in imperfect moments. Beautiful was released in the winter of 2002 and became a smash hit garnering a Grammy win in early 2004. All the negativity and scorn in response to Dirrty was swept clean. Tell me who hasn't had a time (or more) in their lives where they feel down and threaten to wallow in self-pity? We all have, but we need to know that no matter what your gender, color, sexual orientation, or economical background, "We're the song that's outta tune/Full of beautiful mistakes." Christina herself admitted that being abused by her father as a little girl and later suffering being bullied in school made her feel bad about herself many times. However, she knew she could rise above it all and that she was truly "beautiful in every single way." What an excellent signature song. |
