Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Ethan’s only excitement in the small town of Gatlin, South Carolina, comes from the dreams he keeps having about a mysterious girl. But when that girl, Lena, shows up in school, Ethan learns that there are people with dangerous powers living in his town and that he may have a part to play in Lena’s tortured destiny. This adaptation of Garcia and Stohl’s novel is to the point, but it lacks much of the lush descriptiveness of the original. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough pages in the graphic novel to allow for vibrant images to take the place of those prose passages, so readers who only pick up the comic will miss out on some elements. Jean’s illustrations do their admirable best, however. Readers will be pleased that Ethan, Lena, and their friends look like actual teenagers, with Lena’s gravity-defying hair signifying her otherworldly nature. The mental communication between Ethan and Lena shines through strongly and helps solidify their relationship despite the sometimes choppy abridgment of the story. Overall, a worthy purchase where the novel series is popular. Grades 8-12. --Snow Wildsmith

Note, I’m not good at giving reviews…

Read it in 2 sittings.

I'm a fan of magna/graphic novels so I was thrilled when I saw the listing for Beautiful Creatures. After seeing the movie I was quite interested in knowing more about the story (having only read half the book thus far). It was a cute yet intense story. A satisfying tale. I can’t wait to finish the book/series now. I want to know more, more, more...

The pictures were really gorgeous and true to how I've pictured the characters in my mind (from what I’ve read of the novel thus far. The movie characters do not cling in my mind while reading, although the actor who played Ethan is really adorable). I hope more people discover this book and go to see the movie!!!

I love the book series and what so happy they came out with a manga to accompany it. And the pictures are beautifully drawn.

Story:
(3/5) Graphic novel adaptations usually cut a lot from the book in order to fit everything into one volume. I think this is the only adaptation I've read where this worked in its favour. I found the original book to be incredibly slow. It was over 500 pages long and very tedious. Since they cut a lot from the book and only included the important bits, I actually ended up enjoying the manga more than I did the book.

As far as the story went, it was fun to read through, but the plot line was just OK. I found the whole thing to be a bit too unoriginal. It didn't really have anything that was particularly new or exciting going for it.

Also, there were too many things we were left in the dark about and not much was revealed. I guess the problem really comes from the book series, and if the first book (the only book I read) is anything to judge by, the whole series is stretched out and barely anything happens. Unlike the Harry Potter series (I'm flabbergasted that they marketed it as the next Harry Potter when the first book came out) where all the books are packed with stuff and can stand by themselves, this series feels like it's stretched far too much.

This wasn't really that bad in a manga format, because it takes only about an hour or so to read, as opposed to reading a whole book. I quit the book series after reading the first one because it was too slow, but if there are more volumes in the future, I'll continue with this manga adaptation.

Main Character:
(1/5) Ethan was incredibly flat. He had nothing going for him, he was nothing. Not to mention I found the authors were pretty horrible at writing a male character.

I've tried three times to read "Beautiful Creatures." Each time I can only get about a hundred pages into it before getting so bogged down I can't continue. I will (hopefully) one day actually finish the book, but for now I'm quite content to stick with the manga.

I'm a huge Cassandra Jean fan. I've been reading her online manga "Land of Lions" for quite some time and also bought the first three books. Frankly, I read this manga for her art. That's it. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed it. Since it cut out a lot of the long, dry passages from the book for length reasons, it made the story flow a lot better without getting bogged down in so much detail.

I definitely recommend this for anyone who's not sure about the novel, but still wants to read the story.

Manga is supposed to tell a story through a mixed media collage of picture and text. There was the semblance of a plot to this, but the graphic artist failed to capture other essential elements of a novel experience like setting and characterization. Illustration fell flat. Instead of being artistic, it felt more like an assemblage of fleshed out stick figures.

I watched this movie on demand so many times I could of bought the five time over. What a fun book series and the movies was great. We just needed more time so all the parts of the book could be added in and more advertising, tour in the US in News and on ET and all the media outlets.; We need more of the series put into Movies. Loved the books!

Better than the movie, since it explains so many things that the movie did not. Read the book first, then watch the movie.
