Well.... maybe bad singing but..., March 30, 2006
This review is from: Beautiful Day (Audio CD)
you have to consider the lyrical content of the first two versus of this song:
V1.
The heart is a bloom, shoots up through the stony ground
But there's no room, no space to rent in this town
You're out of luck and the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck and you're not moving anywhere
You thought you'd found a friend to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace
V2.
You're on the road but you've got no destination
You're in the mud, in the maze of her imagination
You love this town even if that doesn't ring true
You've been all over and it's been all over you
overall he is describing those moments in your life where things just aren't going right.
so... I pose the question: should his voice be upbeat and exciting when the words he is saying really are muddy?
It's like double imagery.
now: at the end of the song, lyrics are encouraging... "after the flood, all the colors came out," he's saying that it's only after you've been made stronger through the trials in your life that you get a beautiful reward... or a beautiful day.
think about it this way: there is no pleasure without pain.
he's just acknowledging both and glorifying the pleasure.

U2 JUST KEEPS ON DOING GOOD MUSIC, August 17, 2004
This review is from: Beautiful Day (Audio CD)
THIS SONG, WHICH IS ANOTHER TRACK OFF OF U2'S MOST RECENT ALBUM, ''ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND'', IS ANOTHER EXCELLENT SONG. U2 IS THE KIND OF BAND THAT YOU JUST CAN'T HATE, NO MATTER HOW HARD ONE MIGHT TRY TO. I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE, IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS BAND, YOU JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT REAL GOOD ROCK MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT.

One problem, April 22, 2002
This review is from: Beautiful Day (Audio CD)
While I do enjoy the album "All That You Can't Leave Behind," I have a serious problem with the song that became the album's hit single, "Beautiful Day." It's very simple, please give it a try - listen to the first minute or so or the song carefully with headphones on, twice. Then tell me - is there any way you can honestly tell me that this is not a BAD vocal performance? Bono sounds like he has a cold - he misses his pitch and sounds generally lousy during the verses. It's not simply a matter of singing style - this is sloppy work, the sloppiest on the whole album. I mean, jeez, this is the biggest band in the world and this is their hit single - couldn't they have waited a week until Bono was healthy to record the all-important lead vocal? He does fine towards the end of the song, but those verses - my God, this in unprofessional, and unbecoming of rock heroes so big.
