Editorial Reviews

Review

"Beautiful Disaster is insanely addictive. Beautifully sexy, beautifully intense, and beautifully perfect. Jamie McGuire has written a damn good book." —Jessica Park, author of New York Times bestseller Flat-Out Love

"Characters, backstory, goals, motivations and conflicts are a great mix of angst, crippling inner demons and harsh real life. The pace has a rhythmic beat of two steps forward, four steps back as Abby and Travis grapple with their fierce attraction. Jamie McGuire writes with no holds barred. She writes with honest reflection on young people who move through life by their own rules...The entire cast lives hard, fights hard, and certainly loves hard. Deliciously intense." (USA Today)

This book centers on a new college student with a hope to stay out of trouble. Of course the first thing that happens is that she catches the eye of the school "bad boy".

I enjoyed the dynamics within the first half of the book, even how the sexual tension between Maddox and Abby was sometimes unbearable.

This is not a book about perfect love, and happily ever after. Don't get me wrong, the ending wrapped everything up with a pretty little bow. However, the relationship was so raw and emotional that the rollercoaster that was their relationship became quite stressful. By the end of the book I just wanted them to stop fighting! I believe the ending was a bit hasty, and the epilogue a bit silly.

However, the plot about Abby's past is truly creative and unexpected. I am not used to books about dysfunctional and unhealthy relationships. If you are sick of Twilight harmony and love, this book encapsulates everything human about a relationship. The love, tears, sex and fights. There is a relatively good understanding of reality, with some strands of a life that most of us are unaware of.

If you like lust, illegal college fight nights, poker and of course good sex, I would tell you to take a chance on this one.

"When you're around, I don't need booze or money or the fighting or the one-night stands ... all I need is you. You're all I think about. You're all I dream about. You're all I want."

There are thousands of reviews of this series already, so why must I post another one? Well, I do feel the need to say something in tribute of the one and only Travis `Mad Dog' Maddox!

But first, I did something different - I read both books together concurrently and I really enjoyed it. Abby's POV (book 1) serves as the backbone of the series and then Travis' POV (book 2) adds to it and it's such a treat to read his thoughts and feeling - to get even closer to the enigma that is Travis Maddox.
Whether you are planning to re-read or if you have not read series yet, I highly recommend you read them together in tandem. The experience was epic!

What a freaking roller coaster ride! I just could NOT put this down, and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning for 2 nights in a row to read this! Beautiful Disaster is the PERFECT title for this book, because that is exactly what Travis and Abby are...

I feel I should say that this is not typical YA, and is meant for college aged teens and adults. There's violence, sex, language, and a VERY unhealthy relationship - borderline toxic... that said, this book was fantastic. I relived some of my college experiences, and I may have cried, a bit. I look forward to reading Jamie's other books!

Six words, tree sentences: Buy it. Devour it. Love it.
And you will absolutely love it. I give you my word.

Beautiful Disaster is a heartwarming and heartbreaking, beautifully written, wonderfully told, passionate and often witty love story, that doesn't just explore the warm, sweet side of love, but also the complicated and messy side. I was so enthralled by it that I didn't want it to end.

I devoured every word of it, adored Abby and Travis (this two were truly a beautiful disaster), and I hope there will be more and more YA novels with 18 to 20 year old protagonists.

It was an amazing ride, full of great characters, exciting and sigh-worthy moments, drama, laughter, and countless emotions. Kudos to you, Jamie McGuire!

I'm a little shocked by the overwhelming praise for this book. It seems quite clear that the main characters are in a horribly co-dependent relationship, wherein the man (Travis Maddox) has clear emotional problems, and the woman (Abby Abernathy) chooses to willfully ignore his controlling and domineering ways, which are painted by the author as simply his "intensity" or he just cares THAT much. To promote this type of behavior in relationships to young adults as healthy or desirable is scary and quite damaging to society. Again and again, Travis "knows best" as he tells Abby what she can and cannot wear, and "rescues" her twice because of course she must be a damsel in distress and must be rescued by a muscular, emotionally unavailable goon.

I mean, is this 1955 or 2014?? How can we glorify the clear problems in this abusive relationship? The co-dependence is even mentioned by Abby's roommate - to which they just shrug it off, because, I mean, whatever, right? And whenever Travis doesn't get his way, he becomes more and more abusive and controlling towards Abby - at one point, he physically REMOVES HER AGAINST HER WILL from a party because he doesn't like that she isn't paying attention to him!!! She is literally kicking and screaming as he throws her over his shoulder and drags her away in front of the whole party, and no one does anything except clear a path for him - I MEAN SERIOUSLY?! This book is literally everything that is wrong with male/female relationships, and that society chooses to overlook or make excuses for. It is underscoring that awful widely held belief that men just can't help themselves in their aggression, and women just have to see it as adorable that he just cares that much - these are the exact reasons why male dominance and domestic violence are so pervasive in society!

On top of that, it's just terribly written and insults the intellect. No thank you.
