A hardcore collector's item, April 15, 2006
This review is from: Beautiful Disease [IMPORT] (Audio CD)
Ever since I have been into Guns N' Roses,I have had a lot of respect for original GN'R bassist Duff McKagan. McKagan, while he may not be either Axl Rose or Slash,is very talented at bass playing, singing, and songwriting. As mentioned by other people,it is a shame that McKagan's contributions to Guns N' Roses were never fully recognized like the contributions that Axl Rose,Slash, and Izzy Stradlin brought into the group were. And while "Beautiful Disease",McKagan's second solo record that was never officially released, may be very hard to obtain,it is a must have record for all fans of Guns N' Roses.
What you have here is an alternative rock record with hints of jazz to it here and there. Some of the songs that are on this record have a dark, edgy, and catchy feel to them, such as "Seattle Head" and "Then and Now",other tracks like "Hope" and "Rain" do a good job at having both dark and light elements in them, and songs like "Superman" and "Mezz" have Duff McKagan's lightest, richest, and nicest songwriting in them. While McKagan being drunk during the recording of "Believe in Me" resulted in McKagan not singing on pitch on the record and talking on some of the songs that were on the CD (Believe),that flaw with BIM is not present here. Not only is Duff singing on pitch on every song that is on this record, his singing voice here is very catchy and well put together (considering the fact that Duff had become sober right before he recorded and released this CD),which makes the songs on here sound even better than they were written. The guest stars that perform on certain tracks that are on this CD (Slash,Izzy Stradlin, drummer Mike Bordin from Faith No More, guitarist Michael Barragan from Plexi, and Abe Laboriel Jr.,the famous and well respected jazz drummer who has contributed to several albums and accompanied Paul McCartney on McCartney's "Back in the U.S." tour and can be found on the "Back in the U.S." live DVD)give some really good performances on this album (Izzy Stradlin even helped Duff write "Put You Back"),which does a good job at bringing this album together and making a great record out of the songs that were written for this CD.
As stated by several people, record label problems prevented this CD from never officially coming out,yet you still can find this album at various places. Try typing in "Duff McKagan Beautiful Disease" on both Google and Ebay and see what comes up there,as this is a a great record that all fans of Duff McKagan/Guns N' Roses will enjoy owning. The track listing below are the songs that are on this record:
1."Seattle Head"
2."Who's To Blame"
3."Superman"
4."Song For Beverly"
5."Put You Back"
6."Shinin' Down" (Al Bloch cover)
7."Missing You"
