Book Description

February 1, 2005
"Expect regular stitchers to embrace Klöpper's compendium of 250-plus choices."--Booklist

With the more than 250 old and new knitting patterns displayed in 300 colorful photos, knitters can make their creative fashion dreams come true. Of course, the collection includes a selection of remarkably simple, yet stunningly beautiful, knit and purl stitches. But there's much more: Brioche stitch patterns that result in a voluminous and very soft knit; Cable patterns for decorating rustic sweaters and jackets; Openwork and See-Through variations; traditional multi-colored and single knit Jacquard or Norwegian style; Aran and British fisherman patterns; and Rib, Lace, and Patchwork designs. Each one comes with easy to follow knitting charts, patterns, and descriptions for effortless success, and advice on needles and combining stitches.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

For the avid knitter, there can never be too many yarns or patterns. So expect regular stitchers to embrace Klopper's compendium of 250-plus choices, even though the visual and written directions will be far too abbreviated for many to follow. The book leads off with a look at the history of knitting, tracing the craft back to its first mention in 1530, when it was practiced by Arabic nomads. An important reference follows: four pages explaining the knitting charts and patterns. Fourteen chapters then showcase the samples, separated by techniques, from rib and cable to Aran Isle and lace-trimming patterns. Each features a color photograph of a finished sample, a chart of instructions, and written directions. Unfortunately, level of difficulty isn't indicated. Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, July 5, 2004

I won't repeat the excellent detailed editorial reviews, but I'd like to add a couple of (hopefully) useful comments. One, the charts use different symbols than you may be used to (why does every author seem to use their own symbols??) and there are no line-by-line instructions. Two, the chapter introductions offer practical information on using the patterns.

There are a lot of patterns here I've never seen before and many of them are stunning or subtly beautiful. If you are a collector of stitch pattern books as I am, this is definitely one you will want to have and use! The best new one I've seen in a long time and well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars unique patterns, exquisite photos... but awful symbols, February 6, 2006

This review is from: Beautiful Knitting Patterns (Paperback)
I really love this book. When I bought it I already had a houseful of knitting books so I was surprised how much new and exciting there was in it. The photography is the best I've seen. I like the fonts and the layout of the book. I was particularly excited by the jacquard patterns. Elegant and sophisticated.

The symbol system used in this book is dreadful. If you buy this book just go to Kinkos and make copies of the symbol explanation page because you are going to need it. The stitch explanations are clear enough but you'll need that copy otherwise you'll be flipping back every row.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different stitch patterns, November 11, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love knitting stitch pattern books and can never have enough. This collection is one of my favorites because of the many unusual ones not in my other books. Quite unusual are the patchwork patterns in lace, patterns using beads knitted in, patterns knitted into the stitch below and openwork patterns. I also found the author's system of symbols rather annoying. Too bad she didn't use either the Burda or the Japanese system which are the main ones in usage today.
