Absolutely Beautiful,
By A Customer
This review is from: Beautiful Love (Audio CD)
I met Eddie on a recent trip to Santa Fe, NM. Not knowing who he was, I asked him what he did for a living, and he told me he played the clarinet. When I prodded him furhter he told me he had several albums out, and if I wanted the best sample of his work, I should listen to Beautiful Love. Sit back, light a candle, and let the warmth and beauty of this incredible music wash over your heart and soul.

Mellow jazz at its best,
By
This review is from: Beautiful Love (Audio CD)
The subtitle of this 1996 album is "Intimate Jazz Portraits," and that's certainly apt. Daniels' clarinet is backed up by a rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass, and drums with a very light touch throughout. This is a superb choice for relaxing jazz - or the soundtrack for a romantic evening (hint: for guaranteed results, just create a loop of tracks 6, 8, and 10). Daniels' playing is at its sweetest and most lyrical.
The selections include four originals by Daniels and two by the session's guitarist Chuck Loeb. Also, Daniels' well known respect for classical themes is manifested in "Awakening" (J.S. Bach), "First Gymnopedie" (Erik Satie), and the heart-wrenchingly gorgeous "Love's Journey" (Rachmaninoff). A couple of jazz waltzes and even a piece in 5/4 time make it into the mix. There are some wonderful subtleties here, such as the judicious use of auxiliary percussion on some tunes, and the understated presence of alto flute and bass clarinet in the background of the final track "Summer's Gone." This is truly beautiful stuff, demonstrating just how seductive the clarinet can be - at least, in the hands of this artist.
