Better With Each Release, Better Still Live,
By
This review is from: Beautiful Targets (Audio CD)
A stunning third album from the fabulous Brooklyn band, birthed of the chemistry honed from a five-man unit spending a year-plus together on the road. Their sophomore release, "Birds of Appetite", was a giant leap forward, in terms of songwriting and musicianship, from "The Curved Glass", their first effort. "Beautiful Targets" raises the bar yet again, marrying the thunderous power of their live performances with tenderness and whimsy. It's simultaneously tougher and sweeter than anything we've heard before from them (or from most anyone else, for that matter). But as successful as the recording is, it isn't enough - go see them live and strap in for another experience altogether.

Still not quite there,

This review is from: Beautiful Targets (Audio CD)
This is the sixth or seventh year for this band, and while I've liked bits and pieces, they never quite put it together for me. This CD starts off great, "Bloom" has fine production values, lush and full, a really fine song. But then they drop back into rock and roll for a couple songs that seem out of place, and I'm yawning, it's just party music. Things start to improve with the big emo-anthem "Trees", but "Windy Day" has more pretensions than it delivers, and "Over" takes itself way too seriously. "Echo" is novelty junk, and the rest is pretty uneven, kind of sounds like they were copying three songs from the White Album.A miss I'm afraid, I really don't understand it, I think they're better than this. Maybe they try too hard to make something that stretches boundaries and is "important", something that never works if that's what you're trying to do. If they sat back and concentrated on a groove, I think they have it in them to make a really great CD. Not yet. And "Not Birds", where does that come from Amazon? It's just "Beautiful Targets".
