Loved it!, March 25, 2011
I love Julie Miller's books and this was the first one that I read by her. It's slightly different from the type of books I usually read. Instead of a good looking male leading character, you have one that isn't the typical male character of romantic suspense. He knows he's not good looking but has all the other more attractive inner characteristics. The female lead is attracted to him even without his typical good looks. I would definitely recommend it to others!

I just love this - and keep it on my Kindle for when I need to revisit a true HEA, December 3, 2011
I have enjoyed all the books in this (and related) series by Julie Miller, but I must confess that this one truly resonated and has stuck with me. It's one of the few already-read books I keep on my Kindle so I can revisit it.
The summary and other reviewers have provided the main points of the story, so I won't do so here. But I think it is worth highlighting the emotional resonance that the author captures and shares with us.
Kevin Grove just tugged on my heartstrings throughout the whole story.
**spoilerish comments ahead**
He has been wounded due to his physical presence (VERY large - but nicely muscular! - body and somewhat harsh facial features). He even felt rejected by his mother, though his grandmother is a love and we get to see how tender this big bear of a man is in how he treats her. When another woman strung him along and essentially set him up on charges of harrassment - potentially putting his career in jeopardy - he shut down further. He simply assumed love and relationships were not meant for someone like him. He saw himself as a "lonesome beast" and that just about broke my heart for him. Pulling even more on the heartstrings - and I don't even care if it might seem over-the-top or manipulative - is his relationship with his dog. A big, slobbery rescue dog named Daisy who had been terribly treated and left with a patchwork of fur tufts and bald patches rather than any attractive, gleaming coat of fur. He recognized a kindred spirit, and even bought a house so she could have the space she needed.
Happily, Beth is exactly the sort of heroine he needs AND deserves. She's simply lovely. A vibrant young woman who finds herself in a crazy, dangerous situation, and is increasingly drawn to the big, gruff cop/neighbor who steps in to protect her. It takes her no time at all to see the beautiful man inside - if only she could get him to believe in her feelings, and his right to them.
The end... oh the end. When Kevin finally believes. This is one of those stories where you can imagine the hero and heroine in the future, almost like dear friends. It is wonderful to know that Kevin is no longer a "lonesome beast" but has a wonderful woman by his side who understands what a prize he really is. And, Beth has someone who will treat her like a queen - or "lady" - and make sure no harm ever comes to her.

Someone To Watch Over Me, August 19, 2011
Finally!... we have a h that let's the man with the badge/gun protect her without trying to do it herself, especially when she is not equipped or knowledgeable about do or die situations. Beth the good girl next door fresh off the farm has wandered into a nest of vipers that want her dead for information they believe she has. She will enlist the help of her new next door neighbor, a Cop for the Kansas City Police Force. In less than a week they will expose a Corporate Pharmaceutical cover-up to release unsafe drugs to the public, solve a murder and fall in love. Talk about efficient, this was a very tidy little story that kept you turning the pages to the end.
I'm a sucker for any variation of The Beauty and The Beast theme, when I saw this book recommended in the Romance Forum I thought I would give it a try and I'm very happy I did. ....thanks to the poster that recommended Beauty and The Badge. I've read a few books in the Harlequin Intrigue line and can say so far this is one of the best. Beth reaction to being attacked and finding herself in the middle of criminal situations was believable. She did what any rational person would do....she called the Police and followed their instructions to minimize the risk of being hurt or killed. Kevin was the type of Cop you want around 24/7 and 365. Fresh from a bad relationship that had him further doubting his appeal to women because of his size and lack of Hollywood good looks he tries to keep a professional distant from his neighbor as he finds himself getting more involved in her case. Although their initial meeting was rocky they both feel an underlining attraction for each other that Kevin does his best to fight. Beth is willing to take a chance on the Cop with the gruff exterior and a heart of gold. The romantic tension leading up to their first kiss was wonderful. The only bump in the road was their first sexual encounter, I guess the author believes in less is more....not complaining just an observation.
I finished this book in a few hours, the author was able to make me forget the entire book took place in less than a week and to believe there were genuine feelings of love between the H/h. I will be reading the other books in this series.
