Beauty and the Beast: A Dark Tale is a small budget movie that despite its flaws and 'smallness' turns out to be pretty good. Don't look for some perfect, grandiose movie and you might find something interesting here! The classic fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast in this movie is told as a "dark tale" but has the traditional happy ending.

Technically the movie was not all there (like the editing being confusing at times, and sometimes the lighting/photography was not good, with some scenes looking bland or washed), but i found the basic story, characters and the basic sense of it to be very good.

Rhett Giles as Count Rudolph and Vanessa Gray as Lady Helen (the "witch" - a "fairy" in the original 18th century tale turns the prince into the beast) make a good bad couple.

Estella Warren as Belle (the beauty) and Victor Parascos as the Beast are wonderful.

Their relationships and roles are well done and interesting.

the bonus features include some fun interviews with the main actors, make-up artist and director.

rated R for violent images; namely a "troll" killing and eating people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommend to watch it before judging May 2, 2011

I disagree with other reviews. I did expected it to be a different kind of a movie. And yes the graphics were not the best. But if you've seen computer graphics, then you'd say that they look good. As for the deaths, there are many cut scenes that don't basically show you how the people got attacked and murdered by the beast. And the wounds, cut off heads look cheap but not as cheap as in many other low budget movies. It looks unreal but it doesn't look that bad. The acting is actually not bad at all. The witch might some more practice in acting as a witch but as for other characters, I'd say they did good, but could do better. The movie gives away it's own atmosphere. I like the dark fairy tale. I'd say, there are good actors, actresses in here. I like how they've changed the tale. For the low budget movie it was pretty good!

How can you prove your innocence if everyone thinks your guilty. After many townspeople wind up dead, the Beast (Parascos) is blamed. Belle (Warren) and her father know the truth but it may be too late to help. Where to begin....This movie was lame. It reminded me a lot of the "Hercules" and "Xena" TV shows, without the witty dialog. It was a made for TV movie (I think) so I can't be too harsh on the effects, but when someone's head gets cut off and 2 little squirts of blood show up, I mean come on. I think this one was rushed out to coincide with the movie "Beastly" that is in theaters, and it shows (that it was rushed). I was not expecting a lot from this, but it was really, really bad. Ill stick with the cartoon. There were really only two reasons I kept watching, you will know why when you see this. It's actually almost worth watching to see how bad it is. I give it a D.

Would I watch again? - Never again will I watch this

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, Somewhat Campy Fun November 21, 2012
By R. Hawk
I first found out about this 2011 film the other day browsing at the video rental store and picked it up. I really thought it was pretty good. I would rate it almost on a par with an episode of the TV series Legend of the Seeker, though that series has somewhat better writing and production quality.

I think Estella Warren is simply fabulous. She's a bit of a struggling actress from a former career in modeling and if I recall correctly, a history as an athlete from her native Canada... Many good actresses and actors don't have the option of choosing from premium scripts and starring roles like the A list people do, and they must settle for films like this and do the best they can with them.

When I saw Estella in the 2001 Mark Wahlberg remake of Planet of the Apes I thought she was great too, but she didn't get much attention or the best role in my opinion, as she was overshadowed by Helena Bonham Carter's character.

So Estella's acting may not be on a par with the top actresses of our day, but I think she does a pretty bang up job with what she gets offered, and she just seems to me like a real sweetheart. I'd pretty much watch anything she has a role in just to see her.

The story itself has a somewhat unique twist on the Beauty and the Beast theme and they obviously went to some effort to get the "period" setting correct in the film with costumes, armor etc, though the special effects and gore might have been a bit off to the taste of many. Overall though the cast did a good job with what they had before them.

You have to expect that any movie that doesn't get huge box office attention is probably not going to be something that is extremely moving or deep drama.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun to watch, but not great December 25, 2013
The narrator of this film tells us that by watching what he put together we will finally – thank God – get to know the true story of what happened to this famous couple. He says this is a forbidden story between a maiden and a monster – whatever that means. There is a monster who is blamed for brutally killing many people, although he is innocent; in fact he is very nice. Someone or something else is killing the villagers. The beast saves a beautiful girl with partially exposed breasts, a very short skirt, and a leather shirt.

This true story happened in the middle ages when two evil people lived, a witch and a count. The king of the state dies and the cruel count wants to be king. The witch wants to marry him so she can have even more power than she currently has. She promises the count that she can help him catch the beast and become a hero who the villagers will want as their king.

We wait with batted breath to find out who is the beast, how did he become a beast, will he become human with a kiss, how can normal people overcome a witch?

Wow...when I saw the trailer I thought it would be ok. The movie was terrible! The acting sucked and it seemed so rushed. I'll be re-gifting this.
