5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty and the Beast - the dream lives on., April 27, 2000
By
W.C.Tunnard (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (TV series) - "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York" & "A Happy Life" (1988 VHS) (VHS Tape)
This first part to the series is the one so many people fell in love with and it is a must if you have never seen Beauty and the Beast before. For from that first episode so starts the relationship between the man beast Vincent Wells and the beautiful district attorney Catherine Chandler. From the very first this couple captured our hearts, especially Vincent, who soon had his own following - as everyone that watched the series wanted to take him home. Soon he became every woman's dream as to the perfect man, and it became apparent that outward appearances are not important, it is the beauty of the inner self that shines through any differences. That and the fact that Vincent has the most gorgeous blue eyes, gravelly sexy voice, a marvelous physique and a love of the finer things in life such as good music and literature. And Vincent made us review our own life and made us better people. Vincent was played to perfection by the man behind the makeup - Ron Perlman. And there is a marvelous chemistry that exists between Mr Perlman and Linda Hamilton the actress that plays Catherine Chandler, that made their roles oh so believeable. Buy it, watch it and you will be forever pleased that you did. There is a huge fan following for this show who are campaigning to have more episodes made and hopefully a movie too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please put out on DVD!, December 28, 2004
This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (TV series) - "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York" & "A Happy Life" (1988 VHS) (VHS Tape)
Once upon a time, I was reading a book in my bedroom, when my father came dashing down the hallway, all excited. He said there was a show on TV with people dressed up rather old-fashioned, who played chess, lived in underground caves, and read the classics. He knew this show would interest me, and he was right! My parents and I watched every single episode, and all the reruns and absolutely loved the gentle messages and lessons each episode taught, the great cast, the originality of the series, the music, the heartbreak. This is one of the best series I have come across; other favourites of mine include Little House, Avonlea, Dr. Quinn, Alias, Joan of Arcadia. This short-lived series deserves to be put on DVD and please release the CD again, too. I wish this series would be resurrected and brought back to TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why the blazes isn't this show on DVD???, October 22, 2005

This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (TV series) - "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York" & "A Happy Life" (1988 VHS) (VHS Tape)
This was the best series on television in the late 1980's. My sister and I never missed an episode. Yet it still isn't on DVD. I can buy "I Love Lucy" and "Dawson's Creek," but I can't have all three seasons of my beloved Vincent and his velvet-over-gravel voice. What the heck gives? Please put this out on DVD!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, January 17, 2002
This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (TV series) - "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York" & "A Happy Life" (1988 VHS) (VHS Tape)
This is a great tape and has the first epiode the pilot Once Upon A Time In The City Of New York and is wonderful it is about how Catherine Chandler is attacked and Vincent finds her and brings her to his underground home to recover and soon a bond develops, a soul mate kind of love! I think this particular tape may only have the pilot but the tape we have also has an episode called A Happy Life and is about Catherine dealing with the anniversary of her mother's death. Both are great episodes but my favorite is the pilot episode! Linda Hamilton from the Terminator movies plays Catherine and Vincent is played by Ron Perlman. I highly recommend this video to fans of Beauty and the Beast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Doesn't This Classic Have Complete Sesaons On DVD Yet?, October 14, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (TV series) - "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York" & "A Happy Life" (1988 VHS) (VHS Tape)
Beauty and the Beast is a great TV show. They used to show syndicated reruns of this show on some cable station but then they dropped the show from their schedule. I thought that Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton were great as Vincent and Catherine and the rest of the cast was great too, especially Roy Dotrice as Father, Armin Shimerman as Pasquale and I also liked the kid who played Mouse and I want to see this put on DVD in complete season sets!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than another dumb reality show any day., July 20, 2005
By
This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (TV series) - "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York" & "A Happy Life" (1988 VHS) (VHS Tape)
I loved this show, everyones already mentioned the storyline, characters, etc. PLEASE, PLEASE put this on DVD. We NEED more shows like this nowadays, instead of another Survivor, The Simple Life, Real World, or another dumb reality show AGAIN.

Hey, Executives at the Studios, come up with something original instead of following what everyone else is doing and driving the reality shows into their early graves. Give us the Season DVD's Please. Thank you so very much. Hamilton and Perlman had such great chemistry together.

If you've never seen this, and you like fantasy/Sci-Fi mixed with drama/action/romance then you'll love this. It's one of those 80's TV shows that had heart. I wish there was more like those today, thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars So where is the complete set?, July 27, 2004
By
This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (TV series) - "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York" & "A Happy Life" (1988 VHS) (VHS Tape)
I loved this show - too good for TV! - when it came out, and have been after videos/DVDs ever since. The stories eventually made an arc, and I would very much like to own them, as they are well worth a second viewing. (or third, or fourth...)
This particular episode is a classic of romance - the characters have surprising depths, they grow in the course of the episode, and we are left with a sense of sweet melancholy. The evocation of so subtle an emotion is almost unheard-of as a result of television programs; this one was too good for TV, and even though it eventually fell into silliness in its last series, there were moments of genuine genius in the main body of the work.

Please, oh powers that be - put it out on DVD. Maybe even DVD for the UK as well?

I grew up watching this show and loved every episode. I've been trying to find them for years. Ron Perlman is amazing as Vincent and the actor who played Father was everything a kid could want. You really rooted for Perlman and Hamilton. PLEASE release this series on DVD.
