5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Sophomore Effort!
Starfield started out in the humble town of Winnipeg, Canada, releasing two albums locally on a small label. 3.0 out of 5 stars Startfield sequel falls short...
I loved, I mean LOVED Starfields first album. This one really to feel so short of my expectations. There are a few good tracks that really stuck out to me, but as a whole I wouldn't purchase this album.

Starfield started out in the humble town of Winnipeg, Canada, releasing two albums locally on a small label. Then they took some songs from each of those releases, and upon being signed to a major label, released a self-titled "debut" album. While that album was filled with many beautiful melodies and catchy guitar riffs, this album surpasses it in quality!

The very first song, "My Generation", shows a more aggressive side to Starfield, and lyrically sets the tone for the album: "How do we feel, how do we feel? My generation is aching for real!" Next comes a beautiful worship song called "The Hand That Holds The World." The third tune is probably my favourite, called "Son of God" and featuring Chris Tomlin. In any case, there are no weak songs on this whole album. Musically they have shown growth while remaining much in the same style as they showcased on their first major release. Lyrically, they continue to show a vulnerable but desperate love for their Saviour.

If you enjoy good pop/rock music with strong Christian lyrics, check these guys out! You will not regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Christian band I can't wait to listen to!, May 23, 2006

If you're like me, it's difficult to find music out there that gives heartfelt praise to God, while actually satisfying the picky music critic inside. For me, that search is finally over.

This 2nd release by Starfield is a step up from their debut album in many ways. The tracks are distinctive and don't sound half as generic as before (I still liked the first CD a lot, by the way). The album, for the most part, places a heavy emphasis on direct worship with both the lyrics and the music. "My Generation" is a little Switchfoot-ish, but manages to be a great track without pushing the envelope too much. As some people have noted, this band is really finding their "sound". Considering their very young age, this bodes well for fans who can look forward to many quality releases in the future.

My personal favorite tracks are "The Hands That Hold the World", "Great is the Lord", "Shipwreck", and "My Generation". However, people's favorite songs vary when I ask them, or even from what I've read. This is usually a good sign for any CD, meaning that it's consistently solid throughout.

Buy it now with confidence and be ready for many hours of uplifting and fun listening!

5.0 out of 5 stars Starfield "Beauty in the Broken" is solid, January 27, 2007
By
This review is from: Beauty in the Broken (Audio CD)
On my initial listening of these cd, I think I would have given it 3-4 stars, but as I took it in more and the lyrics, I realized what a solid release this is, not just musically but in the message.

The whole release is true to its title, with the songs focusing on the reality of brokenness and the need for God's grace.

"Son of God" is a simple but heartfelt worship that dovetails well into their hit, "Everything is Beautiful," which carries the message that even when things are falling apart, it is the fact that "Sweetly, You release me from the weight of what I've done" that provides the thrust of the song's upbeat emphasis. "Captivate," "Unashamed," "Love is the Reversal," "Obsession" and "Shipwreck" also carry this message of the beauty of being broken when one can see the reality of the God who sees their brokenness, but covers them with His grace. And finally, the "Hand that Holds the World," "Great is the Lord," and "Glorious One" all cap off a release that is obviously intentional, consistent and worshipful in it's content.

Musically, this is a solid release. Lyrically, it is a 5+. Unlike a prior review, I would agree with others saying that it is hard not to see the God of the Bible described clearly here--our being "messed up" in light of His greatness, but His love and favor that help us draw to Him "unashamed."

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome music, January 22, 2007
This review is from: Beauty in the Broken (Audio CD)
I dont get how people are criticising this band. I went to Resurrection 2007 and saw the band preform live and was blown away. The brothers can really play and the lyrics are awesome and catchy. Lines like "I want to hold the hand that holds the world" and "shipwrecked on Gods shore" show the bands love and respect for god and heaven. I coughed up all my money to buy a cd for $15 and it was worth every penny. If you like christian music with good lyrics, well played music, and that has goood people in the band, the next time you are in walmart pick up Starfields "Beauty in the Broken."

I never heard this--it was bought for my sister. But she went on and on of how she loves this CD. If you like the newer style of rock with a genuine spirit towards God within it, you may really like this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as self-titled, November 16, 2006

Starfield's second album has some really good sounds on it, including a great track featuring Chris Tomlin, but truth be told, I was a little disappointed after their self-titled album. Beauty in the Broken is a good worship album, but we already have so many great worship albums out there. I love Starfield's first album for their ability to write great Christian *performance* music when most non-worship Christian albums are pretty mediocre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that good, October 19, 2006

Starfield's second album is a cut above their first, self-titled release. I'll admit that I was a huge fan of "Filled with Your Glory", the song that practically forced me to buy the first album, but I feel as though the songs on "Beauty in the Broken" portray a more mature band, one with a better grasp of musical composition, and a band that has begun to write starkly beautiful lyrics. The messages delivered through the music are phenomenal, and are a pleasant change from most of the music that comes out nowadays.

"Love is the Reversal" is one of my favorite songs on the album. It's refrain of "Yea, nothing is as good as it should be/cause this is the rehearsal" shows hope of the life to come, but the song also touches on the redemption required to get us there, remarking "grace reclaims what the world disowns", a powerful message that even though you may be rejected by the world, the grace of God is more than enough to draw you to him.

"Great is the Lord" is an excellent worship song, and it's lyrics remind me of older hymns, partially because of their heartfelt love and reverence for God, but also because they have a certain "hymnal" feel to them, this is a song that you could easily put to organ music and sing like a traditional hymn.

I noticed in one of the previous reviews that the reviews believes that the albums many references to God could not only be references to the God of the Bible, but also to other gods. I don't think this is the case at all. In "Great is the Lord", the singer sings "When death becomes/the end of all my labor/and Christ alone/my rest and my reward". Furthermore, the entire song "Son of God" is a song of love and thanks to Jesus, containing lines like "Son of God/The Father's gift to us/You alone/Were broken on the alter of love/Precious Lamb/Our freedom's in Your blood", and "Unashamed"'s second verse is "Oh, Christ my King/Of sympathy/Whose wounds secure my peace/Your grace extends/To call me friend/Your mercy sets me free". To me it is clear that a love for Christ and God the Father permeate this album, and I cannot understand how anyone could think otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing new CD by Starfield, May 17, 2006
By
This review is from: Beauty in the Broken (Audio CD)
I have been an avid from of Starfields since last year, when I purchased their self-named album. It was amazing, and I have been in anticipation of this one. I pre-ordered it, and just got it today. I have already listened to it a few times through, and I am thoroughly amazed with this CD. It is an awesome follow-up album. The songs are reminiscent of their first album, but have that tone of seasoned musicians.

A truly amazing Christian band, and I hope that more of these bands make their way into the music scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Step Up, June 23, 2006

Starfield has upped the anty in this one. Their music was great the on their first cd-full of Word packed lyrics and passion. This is even more prominent in their second cd, "Beauty in the Broken." They have certainly found their sound in this one, and I love it. The lyrics are even more powerful, and I was almost brought to tears on a few of the tracks. Full of diversity, this album will not disappoint, from slow melodious worship to fast pulsing rock. I was pleased with my buy, and I know you will too. Enjoy.
