This review is from: Beauty (Paperback)
I was very excited when I saw this book, anticipating a collection of essays devoted to the discussion of beauty. If I would have looked more closely, however, at Amazon's description, I would've seen that I have most of the writings in here already--Poe, Hemingway, Baudelaire, Paglia, etc. I already have. Annoyingly, the writings don't always directly discuss beauty, but rather contain snippets (and it's somewhat problematic taking these particular snippets out of their original context--that is, cutting it from a novel, from a story, etc.) which, taken out of their intended state (that is, they are no longer whole), become distorted. I believe editorship is a problem here, in that the chosen "abridgments" don't contain the original essence of the texts. Still, someone looking for a hodge-podge or an assortment of various treatments on the topic of beauty, and who doesn't have a large library at home containing the writings, would find this very useful.
