Editorial Reviews

The Go-Go's Beauty and the Beat, has been digitally remastered and expanded for a 30th Anniversary Edition. The commemorative edition will be available in a 2CD package and in two digital collections featuring the remastered original album plus exclusive, previously unreleased concert audio recordings from 1981. Beauty and the Beat was the Go-Go's debut album, released in 1981 by I.R.S. Records. The album hit #1 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart, and was the first album to top the chart by an all-female band that wrote and performed its own songs. The album's singles, "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got The Beat," also charted in several countries, fueling album sales of more than two million in the U.S. alone. Beauty and the Beat is considered one of the decade's defining albums and it is on Rolling Stone's list of the '500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.'

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album finally remastered! May 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
The Go-Go's monumental first album from 1981 finally gets a sonic upgrade. Also included is a second disc of the group's live set from that period. Recorded August 20, 1981 at the Club Metro in Boston MA.

Housed in a standard CD jewel case, with a flip out tray to hold both CD's. The ten page CD booklet contains the usual track listings, lyrics and recording info. There is also brief liner notes and an interview page with each band member conducted by Lee Smith. Not much in the way of additional pics or photos. There is a small pic of Kathy Valentine's set list from her first gig with The Go-Go's December 31, 1980 on the booklet back. There is also a pic of Charlotte Caffey's hand written lyrics of "We Got The Beat" on the inside tray-card.

There is also a pink vinyl LP pressing made up from the new digital remasters. The live recordings are not included, nor is there coupon for a free download. It is almost an exact reissue of the original U.S. vinyl LP (including the custom inner sleeve with additional pics and lyrics), but it is on clear pink vinyl.

The first CD issue from 1985 overall sounds good. The 2011 digital remastered edition does add some aural depth and detail as well as a little more low end.

The bonus live CD is a let down as their set that night was plagued with PA (feedback) and mix issues. But, The Go-Go's performance and energy makes up for the technical annoyances.

I have not A-B'd the vinyl edition against an original I.R.S. Records U.S. pressing. Overall, the vinyl sounded great. It sounds very clean and plays perfectly. Oddly my copy does not have record labels which I assume is an error. The clear pink vinyl looks very cool.

I never go too long without giving tracks from The Go-Go's first album a listen. Giving a full listen again, I still love this album and the band for many reasons. Nostalgia aside, my clearest impression is that The Go-Go's wrote some really great songs. I am talking about songs with great pop structure and hooks within that structure.

Overall, I am pleased with the remastered sound of the CD album as well as the quality of the vinyl reissue (again, cool pink vinyl). The bonus live CD and the booklet contents were a bit of a let down. But, the music and talent of The Go-Go's and their excellent first album beats all!

5.0 out of 5 stars 30 years?!? God, I'm old May 19, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was 18 when this record first came out... you do the math...
Anyway... 'B & the B' still sounds as fresh today as it did many, many years ago. In fact it sounds better. The remaster is very good, there's a nice balance of all the instruments, and I heard things I never heard before on a lot of the songs, mostly guitar. Even with all that, Gina Schock's drumming still dominates, and rightly so. Her playing drives these songs. She's right up there with John Bonham, Keith Moon and Hal Blaine.
My only quibble is Belinda's vocals are a bit tinny. When she hits those "s"s it sounds like steam escaping (to quote Dom Deluise in 'Blazing Saddles').
The second disc is the cd version of an old (old) vinyl bootleg called 'Our Lips Are Pink' (which I have), recorded at the Metro in Boston in August '81. Not the greatest sound quality what with the mic squeals, but it's a good document of what they were like live.
And... the one thing that made me really happy was the original BLUE cover is back!

5.0 out of 5 stars Go! May 17, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
BEAUTY AND THE BEAT is not just one of the best albums of the 1980s...it's one of the great pop albums of all time. Coming from their L.A. punk roots, Belinda Carlisle and company, at the hands of producer Richard Gottehrer, take us on a ride through love and heartbreak that's joyous, ironic, both candy-colored and dark, and relentlessly compelling. Surf guitar-inspired riffs, deliciously paired with Belinda Carlisle's sparkling vocals and Gina Schock's thundering beat, give way to songs that are so perfect that they seem effortless. This deluxe version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAT -- presented in sonic splendor -- is nothing short of a dream come true.
