About the Artist

At the beginning there is A" like album title". Even before the first note has been written down in summer 2005, Frankurt `s cult thrashers Tankard have decided to call their next album The Beauty And The Beer".

This might seem a little bit unconventional, but it truly is tradition among the guys around singer Gerre. "First we have the name of the album, then the coverartwork and then some songs are written around that", he describes with a smile in his face. "That `s how things work with Tankard." And it has never been the wrong way so far. Especially the last years have been extremely successful for the boys being able to gather even more respect than before. Without any doubt Tankard are an institution - not only in the German metal scene. For almost 25 years (2007 will be the big anniversary) the German tankards have been showing the world what they can offer - and what they will offer. Cool and flowing like freshly poured out beer this combo has been running. Without seeming to be old-fashioned or bad tasting.

And so we have, with The Beauty And The Beer", again an album that Tankard `s discography can be very proud of. Full of thrashing power all songs are grooving like hell. Strong choruses and good mood are the big plus of this album and show the high art of brewing music the band is able to do.

Germany's thrash metal titans Tankard have returned with their trademark style combining fun humour and aggression. Looking at the hilarious artwork and giving their first couple of songs on this disc will be enough to form an opinion on their new album, The Beauty and the Beer.

Surprisingly, the disc impressed me with its neat production; everything sounds fresh and crisp from start to finish. The bass sound is amazing, as is the more than satisfying guitar work provided by Andy Gutjahr. He plays some of his finest riffs and leads in a long time, as his work on the dark intro of "Ice-Olation" attests to the depth of his playing. One of the best numbers on the album, this track is loaded with brutal thrash metal riffage, with distortion-laden slabs of rhythm guitars and pummeling bass dominating, whilst vocalist Abdreas Geremia does a great job delivering the lyrics. His singing is both aggressive and melodic - a perfect balance. Kudos also go to drummer Olaf Zissel as his playing on this track differs vastly from his more typical, 80's-style drumming on the subsequent cuts. "We Still Drink the Old Days", as its title suggests, is classic Tankard: beer, fun, humour, aggression. I love the opening bass riff of the cut, not only for its melody but also its full and elaborate tone. With great galloping bass lines and cutting thrash riffage, the song climaxes during its amazing lead solo, which is rather lengthy compared to most other Tankard tunes, but it is very well written and performed.

Songs like "Forsaken World" and the merciless "Blue Rage - Black Redemption" are both classic thrash anthems, with zero tolerance for modern production techniques.

I've been curious about Tankard for a long time and like another recent band I heard of, I found this CD in the only CD store left in Las Vegas that has any kind of variety.

I've always liked thrash and this album fits the bill. Rousing rollicking songs with guitar solos aplenty. My only problem is that the singing gets a little monotonous. It would be nice if he (the singer) could use a little variety. That is the reason for the four stars. However, I'm not saying he is a bad singer, he is great, it would just be nice if he varied the tone of his vocals a little.

This is in your face, good time thrash and there is not a bad song on the album. Highly recommended.

For these years when most bands produce dull music, Tankard stands out with Kreator even Sodom in producing interesting and pleasing pieces of work.

Guitar sounds are strong, production is excellent, and drums are classic metal. Although its not quite 'thrashy' its still a worthwhile CD if you can get it at decent price.

To my opinion, Tankard is on even level with other more known metal acts.
