A quality piece of work from Society of Japanese Arts in collaboration with the University of Washington and the Van Gogh Museum, released for the celebration of the centenary of Yoshitoshi's death.Large format trade paperback, 168 pp, 2.75 pounds on heavy stock. Illustrations on every page, including over 60 large color illustrations. Notes of the Catalogue, Index Series, Glossary, and a Select Bibliography. Text by John Stevenson, "Violence and Serenity: Yoshitoshi's Life and Work," provides biographical and historic overview, discusses the role of violence in Japanese art, including Bijin-e and the relationships with women. The images are catalogued with great detail, with comprehensive, readable, and illuminating captions that address the aesthetics of each piece while placing the work within the context of Yoshitoshi's output as well as in greater cultural contexts. |
