Hillman, a Jungian instructor and writer, challenges listeners to review their concepts of natural beauty. He looks at our ideas of beauty and how we identify what is lovely (usually waterfalls, mountains, and unspoiled areas, for instance). A confident, assertive speaker, he has a mostly pleasant voice. However, since the best recordings require a sense of intimacy with the listener, as most folks listen in their cars or homes, Hillman's matter-of-fact delivery falls a bit short. He simply says what he has to and expects the listener to keep pace with his complex theories. The second cassette contains a question-and-answer session with his audience. Occasionally, Hillman repeats a question, but generally he does not, and some listeners may feel as if they're listening to one half of a phone conversation. Overall, his ideas are interesting but difficult to follow given the setting in which the recording was made. I totally disagree with the editorial review given here. It is incredibly shallow and downright silly. This talk does make demands on the listener's intelligence, yes (is that supposed to be some sort of defect?) but it is not in any sense a specialist talk.It is universal. Behind Hillman's dry style is a passsionate, engaging voice which, for those who are able to listen deeply, can change one's whole way of looking at cities and urban life, in relation to what is called "Nature". One of the best talks on tape I've ever heard.
