Book Description

5 and upK and upKids Can Press Wildlife Series
How beavers dam ponds and build lodges are just two of 14 topics in this clearly written title in the popular and informative Kids Can Press Wildlife Series. You will find out why beavers chew on trees, where they give birth and raise their young, how they escape danger and much more. Did you know? * A beaver never stops growing. * A beaver can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes. * Some beaver dams are longer than a soccer field. * Beaver babies can see, hear, walk and swim as soon as they are born. Beautifully detailed, realistic illustrations give young children a close-up look at beavers and satisfy their curiosity about these intriguing animals.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-4--Two books in a series aimed at introducing young readers to the habitats and lifestyles of various members of the animal kingdom. Each double-page chapter provides general information and boxed insets that give additional facts, e.g., "A beaver family cuts down hundreds of trees a year." The texts are simple enough for newly independent readers to handle with little difficulty. The information is fairly general, but it's sufficient for short reports. Full-page drawings clearly illustrate their subjects. Of the two books, Beavers is slightly more successful, mainly because it focuses on one animal and thus can provide more detail. Deer, on the other hand, is a bit sketchy because it tries to cover several animals, devoting little space to each of them. The "New True" books (Children's) have slightly easier to read texts and photos that are not always as clear as the drawings featured in these books. Serviceable additions.

Review

Features concise, clearly organized facts corralled into brief, dual page chapters about North America’s largest rodent, the beaver ... A thorough examination.

[Beavers and the other titles in this series fill an important niche for early readers.

A great beginner’s reference.

Solid choices for homework assignments or to whet the appetites of young wildlife lovers.

If you have a school report to write about beavers this book would be very useful. The illustrations are interesting and helpful and I liked the "beaver facts" they included on the page corners. The book is very informative.
