Look elsewhere to obtain this excellent early Miles material, June 26, 2000
This review is from: From Bebop to Cool 1947-1949 (Audio CD)
This CD collects tracks from three notable early Miles Davis projects: his first date as leader (1947), the Birth Of The Cool sessions (1949-50), and historic live recordings from Paris (1949).
In all three instances, there are better ways to obtain this excellent music, so I would avoid this piecemeal collection in favor of Savoy's FIRST MILES (which has the COMPLETE 1947 session with Charlie Parker as well as Miles' VERY first recording date from 1945), Capitol's THE COMPLETE BIRTH OF THE COOL (the title says it all--the newest edition contains the complete studio AND live recordings of the Davis nonet), and the sometimes difficult-to-find IN PARIS FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE JAZZ MAY 1949 on the Sony label (but heed this warning: the recording quality is subpar for the 5/49 Paris airchecks). The BIRTH OF THE COOL dates are the most highly recommended of the three projects.
