Not as good as the first - but what is?, December 5, 2011
This review is from: Bebop Moptop (Audio CD)
Danny Wilson's BEBOP MOPTOP is an excellent collection of quirky pop songs. Filled with crashing crescendos and obscure lyrics, it plays like a slightly less-accomplished version of their best work, the magnificent debut MEET DANNY WILSON.
Like Prefab Sprout, China Crisis, The Kane Gang, Love & Money and a few others, Danny Wilson mined similar, Steely Dan-influenced territory. Whatever happened to this burgeoning movement is anybody's guess, but apparently just as Becker & Fagen were receding into the woodwork, out came the Brits, the Scots & the Irish to pledge their undying love for the immaculately produced material Steely Dan had produced a full decade earlier.
While most of these bands disappeared almost as quickly as they had appeared, they left behind some nice, jazz-inflected blue-eyed soul - with Danny Wilson rising somewhere near the top of the heap. BEBOP MOPTOP - especially for the price - is a perfect picture of this quick-to-fizzle movement.
I'm pretty sure this one is officially "out of print", so find it where you can. I had little trouble finding an inexpensive copy in the amazon marketplace.

This is a nice album but not as good as the group's first album, Meet Danny Wilson. I would rate it as 75%.

There is a sea-chanty song on this CD that will happily haunt you for the rest of your days: "NYC Shanty." If you gagged on the films, "An Affair To Remember" and it's successor, "Sleepless in Seatle," then you will appreciate the references and the venom in this song!
