Book Description

With her days chock full - designing jewelry for the shop she co-owns with her best friend, sailing her sharpie, and hanging out with girlfriends - Tadie Longworth barely notices she's morphing into the town's maiden aunt. When Will, a widower with a perky daughter named Jilly, limps into town in a sailboat badly in need of engine repairs, Tadie welcomes the chance to help. Her shop becomes Jilly's haven while Will hunts boat parts, and Tadie even takes the two of them sailing. It's the kind of thing she lives for, and it's a welcome distraction from the fact that her ex-boyfriend Alex, aka The Jerk of Jerks, is back in town. With his northern bride. Oh, and he's hitting on Tadie, too.

Those entanglements are more than enough, thank you very much, so it's almost a relief when a hurricane blows into town: at least the weather can match Tadie's mood. When Will and Jilly take shelter in her home, though, Tadie finds herself battling her attraction to Will. Even worse, the feeling is mutual, tempting them all with what-ifs that petrify Will, who has sworn never to fall in love again. Mired in misunderstanding, he takes advantage of the clear skies and hauls Jilly out of there and back to his broken boat so fast, Tadie's head spins.

With the man she might have loved gone, and the man she wishes gone showing up on her doorstep, Tadie finds herself like a sailboat with no wind; becalmed, she has to fight her way back against the currents to the shores of the life, and the man, she wants.

Editorial Reviews

"It's a rare book that draws you in from the first page, wraps its cover around you, and warmly envelops you in its unfolding tale.  This book did that for me..." Lita Smith-Mines, Boating Times of Long Island

"What a delightful find!" Jennifer Fromke, Stitches Through Time

"Normandie Fischer can illustrate loneliness as if she has lived through it herself." Linda Yezak, Author/Editor 777 Peppermint Place

"This book and the lovely writing truly transported me into the world of Southern charm..." Patricia's Wisdom

"A polished wordsmith, Normandie Fischer captures the essence of Southern charm and infuses it with the love of the sailing life...and the necessity for honest relationships." Nicole Petrino-Salter, Into the Fire

"I cannot say enough about this story. I took it to bed with me every night to read before lights out...knowing I had the book with its delicious characters waiting for me at bedtime, kept me looking forward to turning in." Pamela S. Meyers, Take A Sentimental Journey

"I did something I rarely do in a book. I savored Becalmed, by Normandie Fischer... when I come across one that's so good, the characters so beautifully drawn, I discipline myself to stop after about 6 chapters a night; I don't want to reach the end. What I found so interesting about Becalmed is that I wasn't sure how she was going to get Will to come around. Becalmed is truly masterfully written. Novel Rocket and I give it a very high recommendation. It's a must read and going on my Top Ten for 2013 list." Ane Mulligan, President, Novel Rocket, Southern-fried Fiction

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and Inspiring Romance June 17, 2013
Wow! I read this book as a beta reader and was blown out of the water with the emotions and strength of Sarah Longworth (aka. Tadie). The internal struggles she faces being 35 and still a virgin really made me want to cheer her on for waiting for the right guy. That wasn't her motivation for holding out, she had some really bad guys that did her wrong and the time just never came along where she was comfortable. I love how that she didn't need a man to define her but in the end found the love of her life who helped complete her. This is an inspiring read and I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for something to encourage and leave you feeling satisfied.

The author did not intend for this book to be a religious book, however, the characters pray to God and have a high moral standard. No specific religion is discussed other than having respect for God and hope that there is someone greater looking out for us all.

Even though I read this book for free, the price had no bearing on my rating.

Debut author, Normandie Fischer manages to pull you into the life of Tadie from the very first line, and continues to hold you captive with every line thereafter. Weaving a story that is both enchanting and real to life, this is a novel that will resonate with anyone who has known heartache and loss and the sweeping joy of loves sweet arrival. This is great reading for anyone and a definite one on my Christmas list to give to friends and family. I simply can't wait to read more of her stories!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Summer Read June 17, 2013
By DeeJay
This was just what I was looking for, a light romantic read to start the summer off right.

Becalmed is the kind of clean, wholesome book to enjoy while sitting on the beach watching sailboats glide by or sipping lemonade on the front veranda. Yet it tackles issues that concern all of us, finding love and holding onto it, creating friendships that last a lifetime, coping with disappointment in oneself and others, and remembering lost loved ones.

The part I liked best was Tadie Longworth's growing love for the irresistible little Jilly, and her bewilderment when that love threatens Will, her widowed father, pushing him away just when she sensed a spark passing between them.

As a sailor myself, I also loved the scenes that took us inside Will and Jilly's cruising sailboat, and the way Tadie finds a sense of solace and freedom in sailing her beloved Luna.

If you yearn for an old-fashioned romance filled with windswept scenes from the North Carolina coastline, you will love this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Strange Book September 8, 2013
By Elza
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The plot of this book was was interesting, and the view into the life of sailing was intriguing, especially for one who knows very little about it. I also found the female protagonists struggles with self worth, her desirability, and direction in life to be very real. However, the romance aspect of this book was not fully developed. The man goes from practically hating the woman to loving her, and the author doesn't clearly show what transpired in his head to go from one extreme to another. Same thing with the the female protagonist. The author clearly shows how and why she almost immediately falls in love with the man's young daughter, (who was completely endearing by the way) but doesn't show how or why her feeling grow for the father. Other than admitting him to be handsome, the man was completely horrid to her. Lastly, I didn't appreciate the vulgarity of the attempted rape scene at the end. It was not necessary, and completely out of left field in this book. ...and what makes is worse is that the protagonist makes light of the frightening experience by later discussing and laughing about how she was surprised that the man who was trying to rape her was having trouble being "turned on." (if you know what I mean.) Not only was this vulgar, but the fact that this somehow amused and comforted the male protagonist, is just plain sick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful down to the last sentence! June 19, 2013
I was drawn to this book not only by the beautiful cover but the title "Becalmed". As a sailor from one of the towns close to Beaufort I am always intrigued with stories close to home.
We have all been becalmed at one time or another in our lives and I sure could relate to Tadie and her group of friends. Ms. Fischer managed to tell an intriguing story of sailing, love, faith, friendship, the pain of losing someone you loved,as well as the innocent acceptance of a child all in one story. I read the book cover to cover and fell in love with Little Jilly first and as Tadie's character developed I so admired her strength. A very good book that I will recommend highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Debut Novel June 17, 2013
Tadie became the maiden aunt in her little town of Beaufort, NC, when she wasn't paying attention. But when the handsome Will and his adorable daughter, Jilly, sail into dock, she perks up. Unfortunately, Will is not willing to be pulled into a relationship with anyone.

Fischer spins a wonderful tale with equal doses of humor and southern charm. Her writing voice is fresh and so unique, you can hear the accents in her word choices. Her characters feel real enough to be good friends or, in the case of the ex-beau, Alex, longtime enemies. When you're finished, you'll be looking forward to your next trip to Beaufort.

Now, I read a lot of Christian fiction, and if you're looking for a typical Christian read, this isn't it. No preaching, no redemption story. But what this book offers is a clean, honest, sometimes humorous look at what it would be like to be a middle-aged virgin in modern America.

More About the Author

Normandie had the best of several worlds: a Southern heritage, access to schooling in the DC area (which meant lots of cultural adventures), and several years of sculpture studies in Italy. It might have been better for her if she'd used all these opportunities more wisely, but it's possible that the imperfect and the unwise also add fodder for the artist and the writer.

Her life changed radically when she married the love of her life at an age when some would have said she was over the hill and way past her prime. (Clichés often speak the truth, don't they?) A lifelong sailor, she was delighted to find that Michael also longed to cruise lovely waters, which is what they did from Northern CA to Mexico, spending too-few years in the incomparable Sea of Cortez. Sea Venture, their 50' ketch, is back home in North Carolina now because Normandie's mama needed care. Still, it's gorgeous there, too, and she can write from home as easily as she could on the boat.

Her two grown children, son-in-law, and two step-sons are handsome (or gorgeous, as the case may be), talented, and a delight. And now there's a new granddaughter in the mix--woohoo! She just wishes they lived a lot closer to home.

Look for Sea Venture's clipper bow and beautiful lines as she slips into a harbor near you.
