Review

Articles about Janet's story have recently appeared in Runner's World (July, 2012), Woman's World (Sept 12, 2011) and Fitness Magazines (October, 2011)

From the Back Cover

Janet Oberholtzer is a wonderful writer, a storyteller with a wry yet heartfelt sense of self, grace, and beauty. All of those things shine brightly in Because I Can, a passionate memoir that reads familiar, as if it's a collection of hopeful letters from an old friend. Whether she's talking about trauma, depression or growing up Mennonite, we learn and grow because Janet is learning and growing. Never preachy or assuming, Janet is wise enough to let the narrative do most of the talking and honest enough to keep the reader wanting to listen. The stories that Janet unfolds in Because I Can will make you believe that you not only can overcome, but that you will overcome. Because She Did.
  - Matthew Paul Turner, author of Churched and Hear No Evil
.
In Because I Can, Janet Oberholtzer shares a raw and powerful survival story, one in which she not only reclaims her life and her leg, but also her faith, her relationships, and her passion for running. It is a story that is honestly told--both physical and spiritual scars are revealed--and yet it manages to inspire on each and every page. You won't want to put it down.
 - Rachel Held Evans, author of Evolving in Monkey Town.

When several friends recommended "Because I Can", I tentatively checked out Janet's blog first, expecting the usual "kumbayaisn'tlifefreakin'wonderfuladnauseum" drivel I have heard all my life. What I found instead, was a refreshingly HONEST blog entry, entitled "How Does A Religion Begin?". Having also grown up in a "plain" church, I related to her questions concerning God and religion. I downloaded her book on my nook and read it in one day. Yes, it is about her accident and her healing process, but more than that, it is about the questions we all ask concerning humanity and a divine creator. I find myself wanting to be her friend, not because she has the answers to life's complex questions, but because she admits that she doesn't...

Our book club read Because I Can last month. Not only were we inspirited by the amazing journey and miraculous recovery of Ms. Oberholtzer, but we had the opportunity to have her speak at our meeting. This is a wonderful book club selection and our club had the best discussions we have ever had in our 3 years. We are looking forward to Janet Oberholtzers next book! This is a must read!

I read Janet's ebook "Because I Can" and was blown away by how personable it was. I felt like I was journeying along with her in every trial she faced from her horrific accident. Her story helped place me in the mindset of a survivor which helped me to see how my own husband may have felt as he battled cancer.

There are no annoying platitudes, simply real experiences of how she felt about the experience as she went through it. She does not deny her pain, her struggle with faith, or that this was an extremely difficult journey, yet I walked away from reading the book with hope and understanding.

Thank you Janet for sharing to intimately.

I loved the book...couldn't put it down. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it also made me ponder questions that I never thought I dared. Refreshingly open and honest, Janet shares her story of tragedy, pain and loss woven with wit, determination, and hope. A very inspiring story!

I truly enjoyed this honest, uplifting book about Janet's recovery, both mentally and physically from a devastating accident. Well written in a person to person way, I felt as though I knew her as a friend. For anyone who has faced difficulties, this is an uplifting and insightful book. She also delves into her Mennonite upbringing as well as struggles with why this happened to her. Very revealing into recovery from a patient's point of view of the hospital system. I strongly recommend!

Our Book Club recently read this book and it quickly became one of my favorite all-time reads. The author is open and honest about an event that changed her life forever. In reading it, it will quickly change yours as well. It is one of those thought-provoking, inspiring reads that will stick with you, whether you are a runner or not. I have recommended everyone I know to read it and have even bought copies for those closest to me. We had the great fortune to get to meet the author in person, and she is just as real in person. I highly recommend this book!

I became very interested in Janet's story of recovery. I'm not spiritual or religious, so some of the book went by me, which was OK. She told the story in a genuine voice, relating her pain and frustration. It was wonderful to watch her recover gradually with hard work, upgrading her expectations as her recovery progressed. And finally to dare to think of running again, when there had been doubt whether she would live, let alone walk again. This book would be especially inspirational to athletes with injuries, and to anyone striving to surmount obstacles.

Wonderful story line about a runner's struggle to overcome major physical injuries to resume her passion. Her dealing with depression and personal relationship issues also were insightful. As an aging athlete, her focus on what she has rather than what she has lost, is a great life lesson. If you are looking for motivation to persevere against what life throws in your path, this book is a must read.
