Great album, but the MP3 version substitutes the censored version of "Desperate S.O.S." There was and still is nothing in the description that Amazon is selling the edited version. Grooveshark has the uncensored version. Buyer beware.

Five Stars For "Because I'm Awesome"? That's Right!,
By
This review is from: Because I'm Awesome (Audio CD)
"Because I'm Awesome" is more than enough proof that The Dollyrots are one of the best sounding power pop/punk bands in America today. As the follow up to their very enjoyable first cd "Eat My Heart Out", it brings with it a slightly harder edge, and a not quite so sweet aftertaste. But then something had to be up when I noticed the happy maniacal bunny of cover art past replaced with a stressed, emaciated, and gas mask donning one! "BIA" gives returning Dollyrots fans plenty of what they'll be looking for; Kelly Ogden's one of a kind vox which can range from adorably sweet to brash and gutsy, Luis Cabezas's grainy punk guitar riffs, and songs that you'll be liking before the first verse is finished. Production quality is high too making for an awesome (ok, sorry) listening experience. These guys really know how to rock and create memorable songs with excellent arrangements. Here's a brief take on some tracks:
Because I'm Awesome - Excellent song that really gets the cd off and rocking. I can picture kids singing with the chorus of this song while the derision and sarcasm of the lyrics goes completely over their heads. My Best Friend's Hot - This song sounds very much like it could have come off their first cd and it's just incredibly good! I doubt anyone could walk away after hearing it and not be its' tune slave for the rest of the day. Out Of L.A. - The rock 'n roll life on the road is always an adventure and The Dollys create a good song here by drawing from their reflections about it. - See them live on tour 5.12.07 at "The Abbey Lounge in Boston" . Brand New Key - As first done by Melanie this is a fine little tune, but in the hands of The Dollyrots it becomes a jacked-up rocker suitable for moshing to while still retaining the carefree charm of the original. It's pretty amazing to listen to and one of this cd's best songs. Hysteria - A good, solid rock song and one of Kelly Ogden's sultrier vocal performances. The chorus background vocal harmonies sound very cool. A Desperate S.O.S. - Punk energized ventings about the downside of techno-society and the post 9/11 era. Take that George W.! Watch Me Go - An excellent foot stomping, finger snapping, kiss-off that's sure to resonate with alot of women. Nice bass. This Crush - Sixties girl group sound that's a can't miss with Kelly O's singing voice. I don't think The Angels or Shangri-Las ever contemplated doing a guy in while he's sleeping though. Nobody Wants U, Turn You Down, and Tummy Tum Tum are each very good too. Cat Calling and 17 are ok and are starting to grow on me. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that former Dollyrots drummer Amy Wood's work on this entire album is excellent. In order to hear sound clips of these songs you'll have to go to The Dollyrots website, myspace site, or their label's website due to Amazon not currently having any sound samples available. Trust me you won't regret buying this cd.

Agree with those reviewers who thought it a great album...comes at you just like Undertones, Ramones.
Great female vocals and harmony by band. Guitars never boring but exceptional- fast, innovative, always surprising. Like Undertones show in 1980, this band keeps coming at you. I guess I would call this pop punk but it reminds me of great punk from years ago. Majority of songs are great and "This Crush" reminiscent of great slow songs from 50s, 60s with great vocals and background harmony. Bought this out of curiosity...find it fun and will probably never find it dull- rate it with Ramones, Pistols, Blondie, Undertones. Debby Harry- you've got company.

The song "Because I'm Awesome" got me into the Dollyrots last year, and after listening to it day after day and never really getting tired of it, decide it was time to dig deeper into this little band. The two bands/artists that immediately come to mind after this CD are Letters To Cleo, mainly Kay Hanley, and a little known band that enjoyed brief success about 10 years ago Halfcocked. Perhaps a little Riot Grrrl influence, which cannot be much since it's not really an all girl band, but more of a semi-alternative-tongue-in cheek type sound that to me is more early 90's than mid to late 2000's, this band is not just some novelty act (I hope), but more of a retro, reminder that rock can be fun, sure many people are gonna say it's lame or goofy or whatever, but it's important sometimes to not take music so seriously, and let loose....so it's not complex arrangements with deep insightly lyrics, but how can you not enjoy "Because I'm naturally deoderized", and "My brain is supersized"(?)...yeah it's silly, but so is reality television, and it's in this that we can enjoy a laugh at it's expense....that's what I get out of it. Clever lyrics nonetheless as far as I'm concerned.
There's alot of fun to be had here, with many songs to get you moving like "Cat Calling", "Hysteria", "S.O.S song" as I call it... love this one also, right up there with the title track even. "17" which is NOT the Kay Hanley song btw, just a bunch of catchy jangley hard rock/power pop rave ups that make you feel tingly inside perhaps, and although I find the whole thing to be some type of guitly pleasure overall; it's a very good sensation nonetheless.

Confession time: I'm a child of the '80s, but I never listened to Madonna, Prince or even the Talking Heads. I like to think I came of age with Gwen Stefani, Tori Amos and, well, Ani Difranco. Even when I was younger, lyrics took precedence over sound, substance or production, and I think these are the reasons why the first riff of The Dollyrots new album, Because I'm Awesome, was instantly appealing.
With quick guitars, a girl singer and short, snappy songs, I was immediately hooked. The Dollyrots call themselves a punk band, but I hear similarities to Liz Phair, Sleater-Kinney and, of course, Joan Jett, especially when these three artists were at the pinnacle of their success. There is a formula here, but there is nothing watered down about The Dollyrots. These are very radio-friendly songs about dangerous crushes, best friends, heartache and leaving town (specifically L.A.). Speaking of L.A., The Dollyrots hail from the City of Angels. This is their second album, and it's distributed by Blackheart Records, the label owned by Joan Jett. I don't hear anything new here, but I'm okay with that. Working within the pop punk genre, The Dollyrots have mastered the call-and-response chorus, and I love singing along hoping their next album will channel Liz Phair. Don't miss the title track!

Pop Punk...here comes the Dollyrots. This is just a fun Cd sounding a lot to me like Avril Lavigne. My favorite cut, the catchy "My Best Friend's Hot". I like this group. They sound like they are having fun, and what's wrong with that!
