Biography

For all the attention that was paid to her 2012 break-through Tramp, Sharon Van Etten is an artist with a hunger to turn another corner and to delve deeper, writing from a place of honesty and vulnerability to create a bond with the listener that few contemporary musicians can match. Compelled by a restless spirit, Van Etten is continuously challenging herself. Now, the result is Are We There, ... Read more in Amazon's Sharon Van Etten Store

Editorial Reviews

Certain musicians are magic. Their voices prick up the ears of those far afield, melt the hearts of those within earshot and magnetize the attention of those souls fortunate enough to have a clear sightline. Sharon Van Etten is a singer and songwriter who trades in that caliber of mysticism. What her heart bleeds her songs soak in and offer up to those throats in need of slaking. This is what we expect from musicians who trade in the autobiographical. We hold forth empty vessels and expect them to be filled with the reflective elements of a songwriter's soul, mirrors within which we search for some small recognizable part of the self. Sharon's bane may be to feel too deeply, but her raw nerves, open heart and generous soul offer the rest of us a means to ease our own points of suffering. 11 tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazinc January 25, 2011

We saw her at a nice small venue and it was amazing. It's very emotional. I was afraid the recording wouldn't have the same drive; it does. For singer/songwriter folks, this is gold.

Sharon used to work at a cafe I frequented. She was always very kind and sweet. So I think her music represents her niceness very well. Good luck Sharon and stay lovely!

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, beautiful record November 27, 2012
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
Sharon Van Etten's first record is musically simple yet repays repeated listening. There's a lot going on actually. It's warm, interesting, strange, lovely, delicate, intimate, confronting -- the work of a strong writer and performer. The vocals are enchanting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple. Beautiful. June 7, 2009
Format:MP3 Music
On a trip to NY a while ago, a friend brought me to the back room of a small Brooklyn venue and showed me this amazingly beautiful artist. Her melodies and lyrics stick with me, especially on tracks like "It's Not Like" and "Keep." It's great to have a more well-mastered recording than the home versions I've been listening to (and still quite enjoying.)
