More About the Author

JoAnne Soper-Cook was born in Old Perlican, Newfoundland and grew up in Hant's Harbour. She published her first story at the age of 8 when her mother, impressed with the quality of a short story she'd written for a school project, sent it in to a local newspaper. Since then she has written novels, novellas, short stories, plays, speeches, radio scripts and some really, really bad poetry. She holds a B.A. (Honors) and an M.A. in English Literature from Memorial University and a B.Ed, also from Memorial. When she isn't writing she loves reading (pulp, mystery, and Southern Gothic are her favourite genres) walking, travel (the Deep South states of Mississippi and Louisiana rank high on her list of destinations) and listening to the voices in her head. She makes her home in St. John's, Newfoundland, with her husband Paul and her spoiled rotten 'dogter' Lola. Sadly, Sheppie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on August 23, 2013, and is very much loved and very much missed.

This is my first taste of this writer's works and I am very impressed. An original plot here with an unforgettable setting nearing the end of WWII when the Nazis were on the verge of being invaded by the Allies. The story takes place in one little town in North Africa whose inhabitants from all walks of life converge temporarily to wait for their next move. Both protagonists are charming and interesting. Renard may be the local police chief but he is romantic at heart, as only a suave French could be. Jake is a hardened American who owes a local brothel, struggling to get over his tortured captivity by the Turks. These 2 men have known each other for a long time, their deep friendship forged in the fire of wars. Their bond is definitely more then friends if only each man is willing to take the next big step to claim the other. And they may have to as their destiny is taken out of their hands when they attempt to help one French hero escapes from the clutches of the Nazis. To complicate the matter, this French hero anointed by the era he lives in, is also Jake's ex. Add in 2 other solid supporting characters, a seemingly harmless but equally interesting underground agent and a sinister Nazi army captain, we have an exciting, thrilling and original plot. The developing romance between Renard and Jake is sweet and convincing. I wish there is more on this couple and glad that I have found another M/M writer who values plot, characters development and emotional content.

anyone who's seen Casablanca will like this story - it's Casablanca embellished and with a nice twist. The real lovers here are not so star-crossed as Bogart and Bergman; the "hero" turns out to have feet of clay, but the Nazi gets what he deserves, again; it's still a great tale and this version is a fine read. Read this story and then rent the movie and compare - likely you'll think that this book comes out ahead.
