I'm surprised to see some of the bad reviews here. I throughly enjoyed this book and finished it in a day. 3.0 out of 5 stars hot and cold kleypas
One of my favorite things about Kleypas is that she makes a habit of writing about self-made heros; men who didn't have the benefit of blood or wealth making their lives easy. So when you find yourself dealing with some guy who's worked his way up from the bottom, it seems pretty natural that he's got some baggage, and that he's pretty tough.

I'm surprised to see some of the bad reviews here. I throughly enjoyed this book and finished it in a day. While some may see the plots and characters "formulaic", heck, they work-and I might add, similar plotlines have worked for some of bestselling romance writers as well for years. "If it ain't broke why fix it?"

Logan is a great "tortured" hero. 30, been around the block and then some with many lovers, but had only one "true"love that betrayed him. Madeline is the perfect yin to his yang. Sweet, full of love and patience, but still a strong woman. Unlike others, I found it likable that here is a regency heroine who refused to sit back and be betrothed to a truly horrid person just because it's the "right" thing for her parents interests. She was willing to accept whatever fate her actions caused, and that would have been huge in those days.

It was refreshing to see characters, hero & heroine both, who were basically abused growing up (he was physically, she was neglected/emotionally put down) that went on with their lives and became productive members of society rather than let their misfortune make then abusive themselves. The sub-plot dealing with these issues were very engrossing to read.

The playhouse storyline was refreshing as most regencies deal strictly with the "ton", so this was a unique change of pace. This book struck me as similar in chemistry and plot movement to some other well known authors like Johanna Lindsey and Amanda Quick. I think Miss Kleypas has a long and illustrious career ahead of her and will in time become as popular as some of these authors if not more.

The love scenes are highly sensual-I found nothing "icky" about the fact that she was 18 and he 30-hell, the man her parents wanted her for was probably at least 50, so what's the big deal? Marriages with this age difference were common in this time period, so I didn't find it implausible in the least.

Highly entertaining, highly recommended 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars FAVOURITE OF MINE, April 14, 2000
This review is from: Because You're Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
I found that the story of Madeline and Logan was beautiful!Madeline is your typical teenager wearing he heart on her sleeve.Oh,but what a match she was for the jaded Logan Scott!Madeline likes to act on her impulses.Logan likes everything in his life to be routine and stuctured. When the impulsive Maddy decides that she wants him,Logan had better watch out! Passion, love and lust abound. If you want sex read a book by Stella Cameron(Stella is brilliant too!).However,if you want a believeable love story, full of passion and angst,Kleypas is for you! Before you read "BECAUSE YOU'RE MINE",read the story rhat introduces Logan,"SOMEWHERE I'LL FIND YOU".My only complaint about Lisa,is that she doesn't write more books!

4.0 out of 5 stars Annoying beginning but charming love story, November 30, 1999
This review is from: Because You're Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
When lovely young Madeline Matthews decides to flee her her family and ruin herself so she wouldn't have to marry her bethrothed, she picks actor Logan Scott as the man to have an affair with. Upon meeting Mr. Scott for the first time, she stupidly tells him "I'm going to be your next lover."

Logan immediately is turned off from this young girl. He likes his women with much more experience and older, not an innocent like Maddy. He tells her to leave. Maddy runs into the Julia, the dutchess of Leeds (Logan's partner at the theater) and she hires Maggie on the spot and also gives her a place to live. (Dutchess of Leeds from Somewhere I'll Find You).

Logan is angry with the decision and decides that although he is very attracted to Maddy that he is determined to ignore her. That proved not to be very easy when he becomes ill and Maddy is the person who takes care of him. Realizing himself in love with Maddy, Logan spends one wonderful night with the innocent young girl, only to find out the next morning that it was all planned. Angry, Logan vows never to see Maddy again and turns her away, ruined.

Two months later Maddy realizes she is pregnant and Logan marries her, but vows never to love her. His resistance is put to the test with Maddy charms her way into his life.

Because You're Mine is a pretty good book, although very annoying at first. My first impression of Madeline was that she was a stupid girl and Logan was an arrogant pig. Eventually the story grew on me and I found myself enjoying Madeline and Logan's story.

4.0 out of 5 stars It had it's flaws, but still a very enjoyable book., October 26, 2003

This review is from: Because You're Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
I had seen this book before and never felt compelled to buy it, for some reason I didn't think an actor would make a very good romance novel hero. But after I met Logan in "Somewhere I'll find you", I was fascinated by him and had to read his story.

The reason I didn't rate this book with 5 stars is because I got really annoyed with the way Logan treats Madeline after he finds out about her little secret.

The fact that at first she only tried to seduce him to escape an unwanted marriage does not by far justifies the way he reacted when he found out. After all, he knew all along that she was hiding something, and her secret is not nearly bad enough for him to go into such a temper tantrum and feel so "betrayed". Besides, Maddy had given him ample prove that she really cared about him. She nursed him day and night when he was sick, risking getting sick herself and barely sleeping or eating to be with him. In return he treats her abominably for no apparent good reason. At the end the author tries to explain the reason for this (is not what we originally think), but this doesn't make much sense either.

I also found a little exagerated at the beginning of the book, the way he is in a constant state of arousal since the first time he sets eyes on Madeline.

On the other hand, the book is entertaining, the love scenes are hot, and Logan, despite his temper and his intransigence is fascinating. Contradictory, isn't it? He is bossy, rude, controlling, with a devil of a temper, and at the same time, he is so sweet, tender, passionate and just lovable. He is one of those romance heroes I wish were real. The scene when he first makes love to Madeline melted my heart. That's why I was so annoyed by the way he acted afterward.

But all in all, this is a very good book, I would definitevely recommend it. Lisa Kleypas is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors.

To avoid an unwanted marriage to the respectable older gentleman her parents selected, Madeline Matthews decides to make herself undesirable to the prospective groom - by ruining herself! And what better way of accomplishing this than taking as a lover the famous actor Logan Scott? The only problem is that innocent young women are not exactly Logan's style. This review is from: Because You're Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I'VE READ ONE OF LISA KLEYPAS'S BOOKS. "BECAUSE YOUR MINE" IS THE BEST READ THAT I HAVE HAD IN A LONG TIME. THE PLOT IS AMAZING AND INVENTIVE. SHE HAS A REMARKABLE GIFT FOR MAKING THE READER FEEL WHAT THE CHARACTERS ARE FEELING. THE STORY LINE HAS MADE ME CRY, LAUGH AND DREAM. HER PLOT AND CHARACTERS ARE WELL DEVELOPED AND THOUGHT OUT. LOGAN SCOTT IS DEFINITELY WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF AND HE COULD NOT HAVE FOUND A BETTER MATCH THAN MADELINE. THIS BOOK HAS THE LURE AND ESSENCE THAT CREATES A UNFORGETTABLE AND MEMORABLE READ. TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS BOOK AND YOU WILL BE HOOKED, I KNOW I AM!

This is only the second novel I've read by Lisa Kleypas. I enjoyed this one more than the first. Though I thought it was highly unlikely that any woman in that day would plan to ruin herself, I understand that it was necessary to the plot. Logan and Madeline were likeable characters and obviously made for each other. The novel is well written and pulls you in. I found myself constantly wanting to know what would happen next and dreading it at the same time. The "what happened next" was always a pleasant surprise. This novel is well worth reading. I can't wait to read more novels by her.

3.0 out of 5 stars hot and cold kleypas, April 21, 2005

One of my favorite things about Kleypas is that she makes a habit of writing about self-made heros; men who didn't have the benefit of blood or wealth making their lives easy. So when you find yourself dealing with some guy who's worked his way up from the bottom, it seems pretty natural that he's got some baggage, and that he's pretty tough.

Kleypas is a really excellent, fluid writer but I don't think "Because You're Mine" is her best showing. The first half of the novel is really just fabulous - Maddy is a delight, absolutely likable and charming, and Logan is definitely crush-worthy. As long as the two of them are circling around one another, wishing for or rejecting physical contact, the sparks fly, the plot keeps hurtling you forward anxiously....it's a real page turner.

Then about halfway through the dynamic changes. At some point the novel really devolves into a lengthy treatise on the damage miscommunication can do to a relationship. I kept wanting to shake Logan and shout, "Didn't you listen to a single thing that girl said you big looby!!" ... apparently not.

I think it's a bit sloppy, really.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rising superstar, July 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Because You're Mine (Mass Market Paperback)
Their worlds would never have intersected if the aristocratic and snobbish parents of Madeline Matthews had not tried to marry her off to an older Earl, who wanted her only as broodmere. Up to that moment, Maddie had been a docile, very obedient daughter. This time however, she rebels and runs off to London in the hopes of obtaining employment at the Capital Theatre. Her ultimate goal is to meet, charm, and seduce the stage's top actor Logan Scott. That way she can return home as "soiled goods" and be rejected by her fiance. Logan is less than thrilled with her, but his co-manager takes pity on Maddie and hires her.

Maddie immediately becomes the favorite of everyone in the theatre except Logan. He thinks she is a jinx because accidents seem to occur to him whenever she is near him. He also loathes the fact that he is very attract ed to her. When Maddie discovers Logan is very ill in his office, she nurses him back to health at considerable risk to herself. This crumbles his remaining defenses and the jaded actor admits his true feelings to the innocent miss. They share a beautiful intimate evening of lovemaking. However, when her father discovers them, Logan feels betrayed because she hid her background from him. Two months later, a pregnant Maddie returns, forcing Logan to once again look inside himself. Will he choose a lifetime of loving happiness or will he opt to remain in his self-induced hell?

Lisa Kleypas pens a very humorous and satirical tale about the pitfalls that occur in 1833 England when a commoner and an aristocrat try to make a life together. The decadent hero makes the perfect counterpoint to the naive heroine as their different perspectives of the world diverge into proving that love can conquer any obstacle if allowed by the participants. BECAUSE YOU'RE MINE is a fun read that will lift readers out of the doldrums. This reviewer expects to read one day that Lisa Kleypas made it to the New York Times best seller list.
