Editorial Reviews

(In Swedish with English Subtitles) Hes got no style, no flash and hes middle-aged. But Swedish detective Martin Beck is good at one thing: methodically catching criminals so they can be put away for a long time. His tightly-wound partner, Gunvald, is the opposite: an impulsive man who cuts a dashing figure, is in no way politically-correct and who never met a boundary he didnt leap to cross. Hell do anything to get information from a suspect, including enhanced interrogation techniques. Its classic good cop/bad cop, and together with their team they bring down dangerous criminals lurking in the seedy Stockholm underworld. Beck may be a loner but hes not anti-social; he regularly sees his daughter, with whom he has a much better relationship than when he was neglecting her growing up. And at the end of a workday, theres always an interesting conversation and a nightcap with a neighbor who gives new meaning to the word quirky. Episode 7: The Money Man - The double-life of a homosexual police officer leads to a showdown between Beck and his arch-enemy Gavling, a.k.a. The Money Man - a notorious kingpin in the underworld of Stockholm. (Directed by Harald Hamrell) Episode 8: Night Vision - A commuter on the last subway of the night is found decapitated. Beck uncovers a gang of young computer freaks who have transformed the entire underground into a hellish, real-life videogame where innocent people become targets. (Directed by Morten Arnfred) Episode 9: The Revenge - Two patrolling cops are killed after stumbling on to criminals who have just stolen large amounts of explosives. Martin Beck and his team must locate the suspects before it's too late. Meanwhile, Gunvald Larsson sets out on his own personal quest for revenge. (Directed by Kjell Sundvall)

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the good stuff December 1, 2012
Before there was the girl with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Joe Nesbo, Henning Mankell and all of the other excellent authors in the Scandinavian mystery invasion, there was the Martin Beck mystery series witten by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo published between 1965 and 1975. They are the Dashiel Hammett and Raymond Chandler of the Scandinavian school and their books stand up quite well against the best of Hammett and Chandler. This more modern television series captures the spirit of the books. While these are very tough minded mysteries, they offer more by way of humanistic values than we are used to seeing these days. Martin Beck, a middle aged policeman, is a bit neurotic - but his heart is good. The supporting character of the swaggering Gunvald Larsson, played by Mikael Persbrand, is one of the best characters in detective literature and television. Everything about this series is first rate and it is not to be missed by the lovers of Scandinavian noir or noir in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beck MUrder Mysteries January 1, 2013
Verified Purchase
This series of murder mysteries is excellent. It draws the viewer into the story and keeps them on the edge of their seat! The dialogue is easy to follow even though it is in Swedish (with occasional english) and is subtitled in english.

The only downside is knowing that we are nearing the end of the series...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nordic Noir August 17, 2013

This is a police story as good or better than classic American detective television. Good studies of the main characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again great stories with just enough action. May 19, 2014

These are well made series that don't go over the top with blood ,guts and violence but have enough action to keep the story moving until the end.
