Must-Have book for traditional archers!!,
By Drive-By Reviewer "Drive-By" (Central New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Become the Arrow (On Target Series) (Paperback)
The first review and the title of this book are misleading. There is not anything really mystical, or zen-like about it.
It does gives the traditional archer a great tool for improving accuracy...which is why you should be buying the book in the first place (not for spiritual guidance like the reviewer below wanted!! LoL). Byron covers the "gap" aiming method in detail, and what I feel is the most important part of the book: equipment tuning. If your equipment is not tuned properly you will never know if you missed due to shot execution or equipment problems. Get tuned first, then you can start to eliminate all of your form/aiming problems. The only thing I didn't like about it was the "become the arrow" part. This comes after you have learned the gap method. It basically boiled down to visualizing the trajectory of your arrow before you shoot. Well, visualization never worked much for me, not to mention, it's hard to visualize something that you can't see until it's 20 yards away. If you are worried that an aiming method will ruin your instinctive shooting, rest assured that the gap method, once learned, is very quick and becomes subconscious/instinctive...just like anything else...ex: if you play a guitar, you have to learn where to put your fingers consciously at first, then with practice, the fingers go where they are supposed to without conscious thought. Bottom line: this is a must-have book for traditional archers!

A little disapointing,
By Mac "Reader" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Become the Arrow (On Target Series) (Paperback)
The book was just too short, without enough information. If you cut out the part on hunting, the biography (both are parts I"m not really interested in as a 3-D target shooter), their wasn't a great deal left. Good information on tuning and the author's technique I guess, but he could have added a lot more to clarify. It's like the book didn't have an editor.

Become The Arrow by Byron Fergusson
Now I was given this book before I watched his video and I liked it, as an instinctive archer he made sense, then I saw his video where he shoots aspirins in the air at 20 yards, shoots though diamond rings at 25 yards and blows out candles at thirty yards. A must to read, a little self-effacing but good stuff to teach discipline.

Best archery book I have read. My shooting has improved so much that I recommend 'Become the Arrow' to anyone starting to hunt with traditional archery equipment.

good book for beginners,

like most instructional books, "become the arrow" will not answer every question you might have. i agree will the other reviewers who said there is a lot of biographical info that doesn't help the beginner much. what this book does well, however, is explain - with a lot of illustrations - proper form for the traditional archer. how you should hold the bow, what your sight picture should be, and how to adjust for distance shooting are all covered in detail. my only complaint, other than the "filler" material, would be that he doesn't say much about equipment, especially arrows, which as he describes his method he says is the most important piece of equipment. i would like to see more info and recommendations on different weights, spines and fine tuning arrow selection. "traditional archery", by brian sorrells does a better job explaining arrow selection, and other equipment, but doesn't explain technique as well. these two books together, can answer almost every question a beginner might have.

As a boy, I was fortunate enough to see Howard Hill hit a quarter tossed into the air with his trusty bow and arrow. I've been shooting the bow ever since. Byron's book is the best that I have read on explaining the "how" of the art of traditional bow shooting. How to concentrate, how to breath, how to stand, how to hold the bow, how to draw the bow, how to release the arrow, and how to practice are all covered in detail. Mr. Ferguson obviously knows what he is talking about. This is a "must have" for any traditional archer.

If you shoot a longbow or recurve, this book can help you.,

This book is a quick read which can help you improve your archery skills. Having read everything I can find when it comes to shooting traditional equipment, Byron does a better job than most describing his technique. Actually practicing and mastering a "new" method of shooting is a completely different subject. The book also contains tips on hunting as well as several accounts from Byron's hunting and exhibition shooting career.

This is good book to learn a bit more if you do first steps in traditional archery. It is interesting to read, and gives very clear step - by step advices.

Well, I am total newbie in bow shooting, so I bought this book to try to learn some basics.
After two readings, and ten or so hours of practicing (spread over one week or so) on my own, I finally signed up to archery club. Guys there were genuinely surprised of how well I have developed shooting stance and technique of aiming. They thought I had much longer shooting experience. Of course, I am not yet very consistent or precise, but now it really takes only practice, practice and a little more practice. It is fundamental to learn proper technique and it seems that this little book gave it to me. I have my thanks to the author!

Absolutely Necessary,

This is a must read for anyone planning to shoot barebow. For hunters, the section on deer hunting makes this worthwhile.
