I'm pro-franchising, for sure. But I don't drink my industry's Kool-Aid.
I don't feel that anybody who has a little money, (or a lot of money) should invest in a franchise business. It's not that franchising is bad; it's just not for everybody. The business model of franchising requires franchisees to follow specific procedures...and rules.
My franchise book addresses every single thing that prospective franchise owner's need to know about franchise ownership, as well as the specific steps they need to take to properly choose and carefully research franchise business opportunities that can help them get where they want to go.
For the right person, at the right time in their life, who's in a good financial position, franchise ownership can be a great thing.

A quick and interesting read, Joel Libava (aka "The Franchise King") filled me in on so much that I did not know, while confirming what I had already discovered by my own less efficient methods. Hence, not only are we now using this book as our road map, but we have decided to actually work with Joel--I was that impressed with this book!
The downside of making the wrong decision is monumental. For many people, like my relative, a mistake with this amount of money, at this stage in his life, may not be something that he and his family would be able to recover from.
There is no such thing as having too much information before making a decision of this magnitude; this author has the years of experience in franchising that most of us do not have. I HIGHLY recommend this book because some of the saddest words in the English language are, "If only I had known..." So, buy this book and find out now what you don't know before plunking down your hard earned money on a franchise.
Joel holds your hand from start to finish covering topics like:
1) How to figure out whether you're cut out to be a franchise owner (yes, there's a quiz);
2) How to discover the franchise that's right for you;
3) The hidden costs, legalities and other stuff that you might not find out about until after you sign on the dotted line;
4) Where to find the information you need to learn all about each franchise, your market and whether there's a match between the two; and
5) So much more!
I especially liked the chapter on research which walked me through a franchisee selection process and provided the right questions to ask at each step to assure that I learned everything I needed to know.
Bottom-line: this book is a one-of-a-kind collection of step-by-step details on how to become a franchise owner written by someone who has been there and done that. If you are thinking about becoming a franchisee, I highly recommend reading this first.
Very easy read, the author takes an entertaining and informal tone while delivering key information about all aspects of franchising. I finished the book in two days. (My wife asked if I had found a can't-put-it-down mystery or something...)
Now I'm ready to continue my research armed with all kinds of new insights and ideas. But also tempered by the warnings and insights from Joe that not everyone is cut out for or prepared for life as a franchisee. He's very honest about that and challenges you to be honest with yourself about it.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone considering venturing into franchising.
