Don't get me wrong, the book overall is full of useful information. It was worth the buy. BUT no real explanation is given in how this "recognition as an Authoritive figure in your field" can be obtained in "60 days or less". These words are part of the title which is what absolutely grabbed my attention and pursuaded me to purchase the book.

Guess I was expecting a suggested "plan of action" along with a recommend "time line" for those actions. The Contents page refers to "The Action Plan" on page 32. Here you do find an overview of "the plan" which lists the major items that should be attempted, but thats all that given. In later chapters the author even points out how some of the items listed may take months or (in the example of "write and publish a book) could possibly take a couple of years. Many other items noted would be difficult (but I suppose, not impossible) to accomplish within 60 days.

But all of the items listed as being "required" and the details and explanations given are very good, and explained clearly. The book's title is perfect if the words "In 60 Days or Less" were to be removed.

So in summary "this book tells you should and need to to do, except how to accomplish the tasks in '60 days or less ', BUT the book is still worth the read.

First of all you are not going to become a recognized authority or guru in 60 days as the title suggests. Second you probably can figure out without reading the book that to become a guru you need to write a book.

OK that's the bad news. The good news is that Bly is a good writer. He should be he does it for a living at least part time. So the book is an easy read tightly written, succinct and to the point. Mr. Bly gives the reader a lot of important tips on how to get close to guru-ship besides telling you to write a book. If you are interested in being a consultant, doing seminars or an intellectual just looking for publicity, Mr. Bly gives excellent insight on how to do just that. I would definitely recommend this book on that basis.

A few days ago, I received my copy of "Become a Recognized Authority In Your Field In 60 Days or Less!" and it is remarkable. I'm already doing many of the things noted, however, the details you provide really close the loop in my efforts. For example, the 60-day "Become a Guru" action plan puts each step into perspective helping me to stay focused on my niche and message.

Actually, my niche was too broad and unfocused, until I got this book. The "skills exercise" on page 16 helped me develop a clear assessment of what I can give to my customers. The book told me about the importance of a balanced niche and then throughout the reset of the chapters instructed me on how to share what it means to my customers.

This book is well laid out, easy to read, and knowledge packed. The table of contents is detailed; I find myself using this handbook as a reference tool while developing marketing plans or just tuning my image. Though I could easily reference materials, I think I benefited most from reading the book once from cover-to-cover.

"Become a Recognized Authority in Your Field In 60 Days or Less!" shares what most people feel about gurus, even provides some insights on where to concentrate your efforts. This book isn't going to help you hide a lack of skill. I recommend `Becoming a Recognized Authority' for anyone who truly has talent to share and is interested becoming the name to know in their target market.

I had to dock this book one star because the title is VERY misleading. The worst part about it is that Bly KNOWS you can't become a recognized authority in ANY field in 60 days or less.

He has a step-by-step outline starting from A to Z on how to gain credibility in your field. The unfortunate part is that the outline takes a MINIMUM of 1 year to complete. You can't even complete the first "phase" of the plan within 60 days because it encompasses writing magazine articles which take SEVERAL MONTHS to come out in a magazine.

Furthermore, the basis of MASSIVE credibility is publishing a book. Once you sit down and write it, even if you complete it in 60 days, you still have to wait for it to be published which can take up to 2 years!

I disagree with Bly when he recommends conventional publishing while being AGAINST self-publishing. There are MANY very good vanity publishing houses that can turn out a very professional book and can do it within WEEKS versus waiting YEARS for a regular publisher to release your book.

It would seem that Bly would have embraced self-publishing which would have actually lent his (b.s.) book title more believability. I can write a book within about 30 days and have it self-published within 6 weeks. Not exactly 60 days but DAMN CLOSE!

Even Joe Vitale disagrees with Bly about the self-publishing avenue. As you know, Joe Vitale started a HUGE CAREER self-publishing his first books. Then major publishers showed interest and decided to publish Joe in the conventional way.

Bly claims that the general public won't purchase a self-published book but would prefer books by major publishing houses. NONSENSE! Most people don't have a clue what the difference is between a major publisher and a vanity press.

I gave this book four stars because, if you can IGNORE the whole "60 day" thing, this is a VERY GOOD BOOK and I don't believe there is another one like it that covers this subject thoroughly.

I recommend this book. Just pretend that Bly "meant" 6 months instead of 60 days (and that's if you SELF PUBLISH) or 2 years if you choose a conventional publisher.

Nothing earthshattering in here but that is possibly part of it's strengths - anyone can do it. The author presents some excellent and straightforward tips for how to leverage your exisiting knowledge into at least minor guru-dom.

One weakness is that the author is clearly more at home with hard copy mail and less so with internet / email however he does a reasonable job of covering these areas.

Good read for the aspiring.

Robert Bly presents a sensible and engaging discussion of how to be (and be seen as) an authority in any field. The most useful piece of information in the book was the discussion of the differences between a "Guru" based website and a "Topic" based website. However, I was disappointed with the lack of a real, clear, preferably diagramatic, description of the second part of the title "...in 60 Days or Less." I think for most people, the admittedly terrific process he gives would take at least 9 to 12 months. But if you're on the verge of needing guru status, by all means, buy this book.

I heartily recommend all of Bly's books--this one is no exception.

Bly rightfully points out that the difference between an authority (or as Bly puts it, "guru") and everyone else in a particular field is that one individual is perceived as the "expert" while the others remain...well, average. It isn't a matter of the guru knowing more. It's a matter of the guru establishing himself as an expert by using the simple strategies and techniques outlined in this book.

Gurus separate themselves from the pack and stand out as someone who is expert in their given vocation. And the truth is that this isn't that hard to do, really.

Bly covers everything you need to do to attain "Authority" or "Guru" status. He lays out in simple fashion what needs to be done. All you need is the desire to learn AND implement these steps.

If you want to increase your income and your prestige, get this book. You won't be sorry!

At first glance the title would lead you to believe that this book will come across more like a cheesy infomercial than a thoughtful down to earth how-to book.
It is, in fact written in a very straight forward manner that is very useful for those of us in a position of needing to assert the perception of authority in a short period of time.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how "real" this book comes across, with very simple long and short-term goals to follow.

This book is an easy to read but highly informative book on how to become an authority in your chosen field. The topics of the book is arranged systematically and the points are well thought out and are obvious results of a lot of thinking from the author's part. It discusses everything from leading seminars to public relations to writing books and articles to self promotion and profiting from your guru status.

This book is a must have for anyone who wants to profit from the author's vast experience and for those who want to take the most out of a well defined route to success.

Bob Bly's book covers a large number of promotional techniques, yet provides more than enough details on each. What is particularly great about this book are the comparisons of old techniques, like printed newsletters, to newer ones, like e-zines.

From his years of experience he provides opinions on which techniques are better to use and under which conditions to use them.

He covers several of the secret weapons that he uses for his own firm.

I highly recommend this book for anyone in business, and it should be considered required reading by all consultants. Also, any book on direct marketing by Bly is highly recommended -- particularly on Business-To-Business marketing.
