Book Description

December 31, 2010
On Becoming An Artist illuminates the friendships, mentorships and collaborations of Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), in celebration of the artist's experimentations and influences. It opens with an account of Noguchi's earlyguidance at the hands of sculptors Gutzon Borglum, Constatin Brancusi and Onorio Ruotolo, and features such diverse works as his dance sets for Martha Graham (while highlighting his relationships with other choreographers such as Erick Hawkins and Merce Cunningham), collaborations with Buckminster Fuller, Florence Knoll and George Nelson, and his friendships with artists such as David Hare and Arshile Gorky, and others. The book concludes with Noguchi's 1950s public projects, including his work with Marcel Breuer and Gordon Bunshaft, and his later unrealized project with Louis Kahn.

This review is from: On Becoming an Artist: Isamu Noguchi and His Contemporaries, 1922-1960 (Hardcover)
Absolutely delightful! Very complete summary of Noguchi's years after arriving to attend Edward Rumely's noted Interlaken School--which had suddenly been closed by the U.S. Army just before his arrival--he graduated in the usual four years from the LaPorte Public High School, Indiana, as he said in his own words as a typical Hoosier. This volume contains many original documents and numerous early photos not seen otherwise in their authentic contexts.
ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL. --Glenn Ralston

Very interesting peek into the life of Noguchi and his relationship with his friends and associates. Many photos and art work I've never seen before. Very interesting read for anyone who is interested in the man and his place in art history.
