When I started doing my search for other Dog Chefs I thought it would take some time to flush them out. I was pleasantly wrong! I put a few ads in different newspapers and my phone rang off the hook! They were definitely out there, they just needed some herding. Dog Chefs of America was formed making dog companions feel comfortable calling themselves "Dog Chefs" since they were now strong in numbers.
Many of the Dog Chefs I know vary their dog's diet. A lot depends on their lifestyle and their work schedule. Sometimes they prepare meals for their dogs daily, other times they are in a rush and depend on some of the resources listed in the book for fresh, pre-made food that is delivered right to their front door.
A few Dog Chefs I know share their meals with their dogs. They are usually the more fanatically healthy folks who understand nutrition and don't consider nourishment to come from a fast food restaurant or from a can.
When I first set out to write this book I had more of a purist thinking about the subject. But that soon changed with meeting the people I interviewed or met along the way. Creating home prepared meals is a natural experience for a pet owner, but in the last 40 - 50 years we have been convinced that we are incapable of living up to the daily task. The people who have done the convincing make up the billion dollar pet food market!
For almost 2000 years dogs have eaten naturally without the "benefits" of scientifically-proven-100%-digestible kernals of "something" that comes out of a bag or a can.
I hope this book will be just the beginning for your nourishing tour of the world of REAL food for your dog. Who knows, it may even improve your own diet!
