Finally,
This review is from: Becoming a Cliche & Dub Cliche (Spec) (Audio CD)
I thought Dub music would never recover from Gary Clails musical onslaught 'Dreamstealers' and for me over the last 15 years there has been nothing thats come close to it, until now.
Forget about anything Adrian has done in the past especially the disappointing 'Never Trust A Hippy', 'Becoming a Cliche' is a totally different kettle of fish altogether and in my opinion, his best ever work. If you have listened to 'Never Trust a Hippy' and you liked the last track Majestic 12, then for me, this Cliche album is a follow on from that. Great beats, kicking bass, an assortment of vocals and styles all delicately mashed throughout the album only Adrian Sherwood could pull off. If you are still unconvinced, dont be a fool, if you like dub, you HAVE to get this album.

A dub masterpiece!,

I was wondering, that in this day and age, is it possible to write a masterpiece of a musical genre that has been around for over 30 years?
The answer is a resounding yes! Even thought i am not the biggest fan of Adrian Sherwood's last solo album "Never Trust a Hippy" (which leaves me a litte cold), after listening to the second (mostly instrumental) disc of "Becoming a Cliche" i knew this is one of the best dub records ever made. For "Becoming a Cliche / Dub Cliche", Adrian assembled a big list of dub stars and collaborators, new and old, including familiar names such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The entire record is filled with a intricately weaved tapestry of sound and effects, awesome spoken word snippets, an army of different musical instruments and animal sounds.. Every time i listen to the second instrumental disc i discover new things.. an entire musical universe and i am amazed at the quantity of work that must have gone into creating the many details that you can hear in this record.. little snippets of synths, guitars, pianos, indian percussion, male and female choruses etc etc.. I think Adrian must have used every dub effect known to man and a few unknown ones.. but in addition to the amazing sounds and beats which are basically the foundation of every great dub record, the record has great songs, great vocals and amazing jazzy instrumental breaks.. This album easily matches another favorite album of mine which involved Adrian Sherwood ..African Headcharge's masterpiece "Songs of Praise" These CDs are a sonic candy, a must for any fan of dub and adventurous music.
