Editorial Reviews

Eddie Corazón, a 16-year-old juvenile delinquent and secret reader, attends an alternative high school in Rosablanca, New Mexico. A former straight-A student, Eddie now walks the thin line between tragedy and glory as he searches for his place in the world. A long-time friend, T.J. Ritchie, pushes him to deal drugs. Miss Beecher, an unorthodox teacher, encourages him to develop his intellect. When Eddie meets a college-bound beauty, Lupe García, he is struck by love. Desperate to impress Lupe, he even tries his hand at poetry. To his surprise, Eddie discovers that he has a natural gift for writing, but he also makes some bad choices and is sent to live with his uncle, Tío Antonio, in a different town. Eddie uses the opportunity to re-invent himself. He takes off his bandana, tucks in his shirt, and starts calling himself Eduardo. His exposure to Tío's way of life shatters all his masculine stereotypes and inspires him to view the world - and himself - in a new light. Pulled in opposite directions by the people surrounding him, Eddie finally realizes that his own life is at stake and that it is ultimately up to him to make the right choices. A moving coming-of-age story about a Hispanic youth at a crossroads

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational coming of age story, January 22, 2011
This review is from: Becoming Eduardo (DVD)
BECOMING EDUARDO touches deeply with this beautifully well-written coming of age story set in rural New Mexico. Julian Alcaraz breathes life into LouAnn Johnson's character "Eddie" while strong leads A. Martinez and Elizabeth Pena contribute with stellar performances. Newcomers Mike Dunay and Elizabeth Blanco's breakout roles are well balanced with Gary Perez, Josh Cruze, Holly Riddle and Paula Sorge all supporting. The scenery, music and art of New Mexico are richly woven in this visual tapestry through the eyes of Director Rod McCall. Featuring local talent from Alma de Arte in Las Cruces - BECOMING EDUARDO is a a festival darling, that continues to inspire all who see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie based on themes everyone can relate to., January 24, 2011
This review is from: Becoming Eduardo (DVD)
Great film shot in beautiful New Mexico. Instead of following the pack of loser friends Eduardo goes/finds his own way despite his families small town history and lack. The movie is uplifting, moving and will make you cheer in the end. Excellent acting for an independent film, beautifully shot as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little piece of excellence, January 25, 2011
This review is from: Becoming Eduardo (DVD)
Few films in recent memory surprised me as much as "Becoming Eduardo." I viewed the film at the recommendation of a friend and I'm glad I did. Set and shot in southwestern New Mexico, the film is several cuts above your typical coming of age movie. "Becoming Eduardo" not only stuns the senses it also engages the intellect, not an easy task.
Superficially the story of a high school age Hispanic boy growing up in the world of poverty and drug violence of rural New Mexico, the film rises far above its humble setting. Director Rod McCall skillfully contrasts the beauty of rural New Mexico with the drab lives of those trapped by their situations. The fast paced money and power world of the drug dealers overshadows the lives of those pursing an education. Eduardo's life options are mirrored against those of his mother (played by the always excellent Elizabeth Pena) who was forced to settle for what was rather than pursue what-might-be.
We've seen all of these elements before, but McCall manages to mix them up in a fresh format that captures the pain of someone struggling with their surrounding while avoiding the usual preachy film clichés. In doing so, McCall produced in "Become Eduardo" a film you'll want to see and see again.
