5.0 out of 5 stars Captain Bob has a definite insight into the hiring process!
Captain Bob has written a book that will help anybody that is serious about getting a firefighter job. I find it ironic that a person would want the easy "answers" to any oral board questions, as this is exactly the opposite of what his program is about. He arms a candidate with good information and lets them develop their own answers with "nuggets"...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $30
I expected a whole lot more from this book. The author gives some good advice but doesn't answer questions directly. He states not to do something, but doesn't explain what you should do instead. There is a lot of good basic information. This book has no meat to it though, it's just basic information. An example of this is, he gives you 30+ typical oral board questions,...

There is a lot of good basic information. This book has no meat to it though, it's just basic information. An example of this is, he gives you 30+ typical oral board questions, however, he doesn't give you any insight as to how to answer the questions/ what good answers would be. Another example is the typical question, why do you want to be a FF? The author states don't use the "clone/ soap opera answer": 'cause I like to help people...however, he doesn't give you suggestions as to a better way to answer or other answer possibilities.

I find it ironic that a person would want the easy "answers" to any oral board questions, as this is exactly the opposite of what his program is about. He arms a candidate with good information and lets them develop their own answers with "nuggets" from their life experiences. I have followed his book and his personal advice (yes, he will answer and return your phone calls!) and am happy to say that I recently just received a job offer. I have recommended and will still recommend this book to people looking to get into the fire department.

With out this book I would still be trying to figure things out. If your serious about getting the call this is the best investment you can make. The author has even answered questions that I have emailed to him. My only regret is that I didn't buy it before my first interview.

I just finished reading Captain Bob's new book, and I definitely recommend it to anyone testing to become a firefighter. Captain Bob has done a great job putting together a variety of information and situations from real-life experience that everyone should be able to benefit from. This is definitely a labor of love, and it shows. Great job Captain Bob and thanks again for the book as well as your support!

5.0 out of 5 stars essential book for candidates, October 19, 2003

I have just read this book cover to cover and it is golden! Although Capt Bob is a well known specialist on oral boards, his book goes much further. It has tips, suggestions, hints, and advice to cover every step of the fire department hiring process from start to finish. Capt Bob always has a dash of humor to keep it interesting. He also uses many real life examples to really bring the points home so that you can see why he makes the points that he does and not make the same mistakes that others have. I am already much more confident about my chances to obtain a badge. I also used his resume service that is offered in the book and with out a doubt could see how much simpler and better his version was. If you want to get a leg up on the competition and shorten your waiting period for a badge then this book is a must have.
