Excellent Resource,
By Ms Diva "cycworker" (Nanaimo, B.C. Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Becoming a Helper (Counseling) (Paperback)
This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

Introduction to Counseling,

This is an excellent book for anyone beginning or thinking of starting a career in counseling. The number one rule of counseling is that the counselor must know oneself. This book's purpose is to get the reader to reflect on oneself in a way that questions one's initial desire to counsel and how to counsel in a respectful way that does not place the counselor's values and beliefs upon the client. For that reason, this book is an essential read for anyone exploring the possibity of becoming a counselor.

This text is a keepsake. I bought it for a class but it assisted in life and in my vocation of ministry. Anyone going into counseling should consider adding this text to his/her collection.

Being in a BA program for Human Services for the last 3.5 years, I've read three or four Corey texts. In general, they write a good, comprehensive book, and this one is no different. This serves as an excellent entry point to many of the topics that should be addressed when entering the helping field, including ethical issues, internal conflict, boundaries with clients, and cultural understandings. That being said, I've been assigned it as a text in my 4th year and it is a bit late in my studies to use a text such as this. Regardless, it has good information to offer and I recommend it.

It was required reading for a class. Not my favorite book because of the heavy emphasis on counseling. Some of my other classmates really liked it though.

Becoming a Helper: A Beginner's Guide to the Helping Professions,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Becoming a Helper (Paperback)
The Coreys do just about everything that can be expected from an introduction to the field of counseling. They set the expectation of becoming a pretty good listener and responder, and present many helpful strategies to achieve that goal. In Chapter 4, they explore some of the difficulties a beginner will face, especially the section on "Understanding and Dealing with Difficult Clients." Their approach, however, is very mainstream, which leaves slim pickings for such fields as substance abuse counseling or working with troubled youth. It is a good first text, but requires supplemental readings for those interested in a survey of the various counseling fields in the profession.

This book takes you right from the beginning of your helping career through each step answering just the kind of questions we each would ask. This was a great guide book that was very professional yet down to earth also. Anyone who wants to be successful in their helping profession should read this book. It is one text book I will be keeping!

This book does a nice job of describing the counseling field. It explains the qualifications that are necessary. In addition, it thoroughly covers different counseling scenarios and strategies that should be applied.
