Best study skills book for H.S. students I've seen!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Becoming a Master Student, Eighth Edition (Paperback)
I have used this text for the past 4 years in grades 9-12 as a primary text for a study skills course for students with moderate learning disabilites and have met much success with it. It is varied, easy-to-read, concree and has tons of suggestions. It also provides a journal component whereby students can document previous patterns/perceptions and present attitudes and integrate suggested study tips within their study habits. We haven't finished all the chapters, but we have covered most of them.

We use this text in our student success courses and our students love it. It is informative and motivating, even fun! I have a Ph.D. and I still learned some things when I read this book. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to increase their chances of college and career success.

Have you spent endless hours in class and studying at home with less than desireable effects? Maybe you are a terrific student but would like to know some tips for getting the facts to stick a little better? Perhaps you're lacking a few basic easy skills that will help you master your mind.

This was a textbook in one of my courses. I found it to be condescending in its tone, and completely useless. It comes across as being full of New Age hokum, and reads like it was written by a preschool teacher. The author instucts students to act in an obsessive-compulsive way. For example, we are told to write a minute-by-minute plan for every day. The book is full of "tests" with which students can supposedly gauge their study skills. I think these are all completely invalid. The questions on the tests have nothing to do with what they are trying to assess. My highest grades are in English, and, according to one of the tests in this book, English is my weakest subject! The time I spent doing the homework assigned from this book would have been better spent on studying for my other courses. In the introduction the author says "this book is worthless." He's trying to be clever by saying that the book is only useless if the student doesn't use it. Well, I used it and it's still worthless!
