4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad place to start, January 22, 2009

This book isn't a bad place to start when looking at becoming a midwife and starting an apprenticeship. Some of the information was a bit out-dated, so pick and choose what you will learn from this book. I did really appreciate how an apprenticeship was outlined for phases and how many births should be in each phase. This was a great jumping off point for my apprenticeship and made it much easier to organize.

If you can find it, I recommend this book. Carolyn Steiger writes for the potential apprentice, but also the potential preceptor / teacher. She does a great job modeling how an apprenticeship should or could be set up and how the educational process might proceed. Topics include things an aspiring apprentice can do to make herself better prepared, when an apprenticeship is completed or should be dissolved, communication issues and expectations between apprentice/teacher, communication considerations between midwife/medical professional, as well considerations as to whether midwifery is really for you or not. There are some newer books out that do similar things, such as Paths to Becoming a Midwife: Getting an Education by Jan Tritten, et al. You can see a TOC at [...]. Amazon sells it here Paths to Becoming a Midwife: Getting an Education.
