Becoming Open Souls also is a bearer of knowledge that is critical to our common survival of terrorists because it tells how a closed and fundamentalist society works. In the author's words, knowledge of how any closed, religious society works will reveal the common traits of all who seek to persuade seekers: "Understanding Mormons is important to the rest of us because the Mormon hierarchy works hard at understanding us" and "when we come to know the experience of institutional Mormonism then, we actually, look at the rest of ourselves, reflected in a cultural mirror."
Indeed, this book exposes the mistakes of the past because it tells the old memories of one who was once part of the inner circle, but who has since become far more open than he was when he particpated in the excommunication of others from his church because they were in love with persons of their own sex. Beginning with what he calls The Seduction, this spiritual journey takes the reader through the various stages of awareness and acknowledgement that carry any toward transcendance. However, because of six Mexican Indigenous families---[with whom the author lived, loved and learned]---Becoming Open Souls also includes the profound wisdom of Mexica/Toltec ancient wisdom which, the author gleaned from his "new mentors" who "celebrated" his same-sex attractions, rather than, condemn or judge them.
