BECOMING QUINN by Brett Battles, prequel to THE CLEANER, is the story of a Phoenix PD rookie cop named Jake Oliver. First on the scene of a murder, he notices details overlooked by later investigators, and he follows up those leads, unknowingly getting into the middle of a government-related operation. The novella follows Oliver and his coworker as they fight to put pieces together and convince their superiors of their suspicions.

Wonderfully written and addicting, this book will command your interest in the first chapter and keep it until the last page. Quinn fans will be delighted to learn about their hero before he was their hero, and new readers can look forward to the story of a cop who jumped in a little over his head.

I can't express how highly I recommend BECOMING QUINN; like all the Quinn novels, it's fast-paced and thrilling, and simply excellent. It's the beginning of it all, the beginning of Jonathan Quinn, the beginning of one of the best protagonists I've ever met - and I've met quite a few!

Jonathan Quinn, cleaner. Extremely good at his job in body removal & leaving no trace. I've loved Brett Battles's Quinn series since The Cleaner was first published. I was hooked because I'd never read a book with this type of character or story line. Through each book in the series, you learn more about what Quinn's job entails & the types of people that hire him. But I had never really given thought to how Quinn got to where he was. Until now.

Becoming Quinn, although it's only a novella, is probably my most favorite of the Quinn books. I say this with some reservation since I really do love all of Brett's books, but in Becoming Quinn we see a side of Quinn we usually wouldn't see. We find a young man struggling to become a good cop. A cop torn between doing what duty tells him to do, or following his instincts when he knows his "gut feeling" won't be believed by his superiors without solid proof. As we follow Quinn on his quest to find the truth, we find a believable character. One that we can sympathize with and relate to. It's a wonderful story & gives the reader insight on how Quinn, well, became Quinn. I really felt for this character and the choices he has to make. And the ending, well, I can only say that I didn't expect to have the reaction that I did. :)

If you haven't read Becoming Quinn, you should. It's a marvelous novella!

Especially when you have a continuing series, the reader wants to know how the character became what he is. whether cop, spy, spec ops soldier or even a cleaner, you want to know how it all started. Brett Battles uses this novella to follow the route from rookie cop to Quinn the cleaner.
An excellent story, long enough to get you where you want to be but without dragging you through all the details you might have picked up in the previous books in the series. Well worth the time spent to learn about one of my favorite characters.

This lengthy novella by Brett Battles documenting the origin of Quinn was a pleasure to read and a must have for any fan of the series. Look forward to more treats from this author, especially some of the back-stories that chronicle his rise to the "Cleaner" he's become.

Slow to start getting involved, the characters didn't take shape right away, but stick it out and you won't be disappointed. Good read

I'd heard great things about Brett Battles and especially his Quinn series, so when I heard about this prequel, Becoming Quinn, I thought it would be a good place to start. Not the first Quinn book released, but still kind of at the beginning of the series.

It's obvious from the first few pages that Battles is a wonderful author. He skilfully introduces two main characters and points of view, giving the reader an insight into both characters and their very different worlds - worlds that end up intersecting in a dramatic and deadly fashion.

I really enjoyed the voice of both protagonists, Durrie and rookie cop Jake Oliver, who is known to readers of the series as Jonathan Quinn, the cleaner.

There was great characterisation coupled with action and intrigue -- a book I'd highly recommend to all readers who like a good crime or thriller novel with interesting characters.

Becoming Quinn is an incredibly strong entry into Quinn's world, but I also get the feeling that if you'd read the rest of the series first you'd appreciate this prequel even more!

Brett Battles' character of Jonathan Quinn has always been a great twist on the traditional thriller protagonist, and both new readers and old fans will be delighted by this glimpse into Quinn's formation. You don't need to be familiar with the series to read this - in fact, it makes a wonderful introduction to the character and his abilities as he discovers them for himself.

Although this is labelled a novella, I know authors whose full-length work doesn't stretch much further than the 57,000 words of this tale. Battles uses the form to its best advantage, keeping the story tight and the pace rapid, while still rounding out and developing his characters. Great fun and highly recommended.

Battles writes the prequel to his "Cleaner" series. It is a fascinating introduction to Quinn, and how he became Durrie's protege and a first rate cleaner. Even if you have already read the series and know much of what happens after his introduction to the profession, this is an interesting facet of Quinn's character development - right down to his name. For the price especially, not to be missed.
