Editorial Reviews

Becoming Santa is the story of one man entering the culture and character of Santa Claus for a single season. We follow Jack as he bleaches his hair, goes to Santa School and tries to do everything that Santa is asked to do. He works as a sidewalk Santa, does home visits, a Polar Express Train and a parade. Along the way, Jack collects children's wishes, learns about the benefits of belief, the history and origin of Santa and the ordinary people keeping the Santa spirit alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Becoming Santa - You Will Believe! February 17, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I'm a professional Santa here in Australia so it was really great to see how the other Santas do their thing. I enjoyed seeing his transformation both in physical looks and in his approach to the role. He gradually began to look more like Santa and also began to believe in the role of Santa.

I enjoyed seeing the Santa School sessions, something we don't have down this way yet so it was instructive to see how they handle the hard topics as well as the fun stuff.

To get to see him perform in the parades and special events, even to do a volunteer stint standing on the street ringing a bell, great stuff.

Did I get anything out of this? Sure, as a Santa I got to see many faces of people that up until now have just been a name on an email. It was especially cool for me to see Adele and her workshop. Her name has high respect for quality suits in the Santa community so to see her at work was a treat for me.

Away from my own role I also enjoyed seeing somebody "get it" about Christmas and just what it is to really become part of the fun and the joy of the Season.

I think families will enjoy this tale so long as their children are of an age where they can understand that there is a real Santa and there are also lots of helpers.

Quality of the movie and editing was good and I was impressed that this movie came out of an independent movie house.

One negative was the many (4?) trailers I had to sit through before I got to see the menu. Maybe it was something I was doing wrong but this seemed to be forcing me to watch stuff that I had no interest in just so that I could get to the good bits.

FANTASTIC-OUTSTANDING will laugh out loud, your eyes will tear up...but most of all you will feel compassion in your heart for the wonderful magical memories each Santa brings to children when he puts on The Red Suit and Black Boots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Classic November 17, 2011
Becoming Santa is a truly wonderful film, full of magic and fun. The star, Jack Sanderson, is one-of-a-kind . . . sweet, nostalgic, witty, and smart as a whip. His journey to rekindle a sense of the Christmas spirit is nothing short of delightful. He explores the history of Santa Claus (sounds boring, but it's not), attends "Santa school (who knew there were Santa schools?)," rides the Polar Express (great moments here), and practices his quick comebacks with young children around the United States. This is a Christmas classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Holiday Treat for the Child In Each of Us! November 27, 2011
Jack Sanderson is on a mission. After he unearths a picture of his recently deceased father dressed up as Santa Claus, he wants to know more about why his `old man' played St. Nick. He can no longer ask his father, so the curiosity soon begins to get the best of him. Was it out of a duty or an obligation? Did he lose a bet? Why would his father of all people -- not a particularly jolly fellow, as Jack can recall - agree to play Santa? He never seemed all that jolly or jovial to Jack, so what possessed the elder man to do it? Was it some big mystery, or was the man simply looking for some way to recapture the magical spirit of the holiday season? Jack's mission is to `become Santa' for a single Christmas season, hoping that he can discover what impulse may've propelled his father to do it so many years before ... but Jack ends up perhaps discovering that he's missed out on more than just an old family secret.

Thus begins the magical and delightful BECOMING SANTA, a documentary that details Jack's journey to serve as the ultimate holiday fat man. From his humble (and smelly!) beginnings of bleaching his beard, mustache, and hair a pure white all the way to showing up by appointment in several homes on Christmas Eve where children are briefly allowed to spot Santa Claus placing presents under the Christmas Tree, Jack embraces his new mission, and he learns a little about himself and what truly makes the yuletide gay along the way. He has a custom Santa suit tailored to his body; he attends a `Santa School' to get training on how to deal with children; and he even volunteers to play St. Nick on the Susquehanna Railroad's `Polar Express'!

5.0 out of 5 stars I believe in Santa! November 15, 2011
By Ann
This heart-warming documentary is a must-see. People of all backgrounds will laugh and cry (happy tears!) during this incredible documentary. Watching this film reminds us of the magical feeling we had as children during the holidays. My jewish friends love it, too!! Perfect for that Scrooge in your life or that person who never lost the Christmas spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Christmas Present for all who believe! December 1, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
How many documentaries can truly "touch" a person in a heartfelt way? A movie that makes the little "Scrooge" in all of us melt away and put a giant smile on your face with a warm feeling in your heart? This movie delivers all that and more! Jack is a wonderful person and makes a great Santa (the kind of Santa I would have loved to see as a child). Watching his journey makes you feel like you're with him at every step. It's engaging, fun, and I didn't find one minute of the film boring. If you love Christmas, this movie is for you. Of course, you may not want to show this to your child unless they know that there are many Santas out there that are his "helpers," but they still report to the Big Guy (wink). This movie is for the child in all of us. Highly, HIGHLY recommended! And Merry Christmas!
