FEQ's masterpiece of abstracted dance, April 2, 2002
This review is from: Becoming Transparent (Audio CD)
Though their first few albums were of decent quality, this one has finally hit the spot. The music is interesting, beautiful, strange, dark, ever-changing, filled with subtle detail and coloration in every measure, and (despite all of these "artsy" qualities) filled with juicy hooks in every song that keep ya coming back for more.
My initial favorite was "exasperation", the "pop hit" of the album, and ideed--the title fits--this one will get your blood boiling to fever pitch. . . "svengali" has some beautifully colored vocals, I particularly like the way the vocals branch into harmony only briefly, for teasingly blissful instants on the word "sky". . . "transform/disappear"'s beats constantly threaten to complexify into total anarchy, yet somehow they maintain clarity, even danceability.
Although I certainly enjoyed the album at first, it took a few listenings before I recognized it for the masterpiece that it is.
Buy it, love it. .
