About the Author

The late John Osteen served as a pastor, evangelist, author, and teacher for 60 years. He founded the Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas in 1959, and hosted the weekly "John Osteen" television program for 16 years, reaching millions in the U.S. and extending to 100 countries. He also traveled extensively throughout the world, taking the message of God's love, healing, and power to people of all nations.

More About the Author

Joel Osteen is a native Texan and the Pastor of Lakewood Church, which according to Church Growth Today is America's largest and fastest growing church with over 38,000 attendees. On July 16, 2005 after completing $95 million dollars in renovations, Joel moved Lakewood Church into its new 16,000 seat home -- the former Compaq Center which is now the largest regularly-used worship center in the United States. According to Nielsen Media Research, Joel is the most watched inspirational figure in America. His weekly sermon is broadcast into television markets across the U.S. where it is viewed by seven million Americans each week and more than 20 million each month. His weekly broadcast is also seen in almost 100 nations around the world. In 2004 his first book, Your Best Life Now was released by Time Warner debuting at the top of the New York Times Bestsellers List and quickly rising to #1. It remained on the New York Times Bestseller for more than 2 years and has sold more than 4 million copies. Most recently, Joel was named as one of Barbara Walters' "10 Most Fascinating People of 2006" and he was selected as the "Most Influential Christian in 2006" by the readers of Church Report Magazine. The son of John Osteen -- a highly respected minister of the Gospel and the founder of Lakewood Church -- Joel attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he studied radio and television communications. In 1982, Joel returned to Houston and founded Lakewood's television ministry where he produced John Osteen's televised sermons for 17 years until January 1999 when his father passed away. For many years John Osteen encouraged Joel to preach, but he always declined preferring to work behind the scenes. In early 1999, Joel felt compelled to accept his father's invitation and he preached his first sermon on January 17th of that year. Little did anyone know that would be the last Sunday of John Osteen's life. Two weeks later Joel began preaching and later that year was installed as the new Senior Pastor of Lakewood Church. Almost immediately, weekly attendance began to grow at an extraordinary rate and, in 2005 Joel moved Lakewood Church into its present location, the former Compaq Center, a 16,000 seat arena that was once home to the Houston Rockets professional basketball team. Now, with his wife Victoria and the leadership staff of Lakewood, this innovative church is poised for the new millennium. Joel's extraordinary success can be found in his core message: That our God is a good God who desires to bless those who are obedient and faithful to Him through Jesus Christ. It is Joel's deepest desire that his own life be an example of that principle and that everyone who hears this message of hope and encouragement would choose to accept God's goodness and mercy and to become all that God wants them to be.

"And the apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith.'" -- Luke 17:5 (NKJV)

Many Christians have prayed for more faith without appreciating that gaining more trials is one way that God helps us to realize we can trust Him to carry us through anything. Before such prayers, I suggest that those who wish for more faith to read and study this book. You will certainly pray more appropriate prayers concerning faith building if you do.

I enjoy Pastor Joel Osteen's messages, and I have heard him speak of Pastor John Osteen's teachings . . . but I've never listened to a recorded message by his father. My curiosity led me to read this book to understand more about the differences in their teaching styles. I am glad I did. My understanding of faith building increased, and I was pointed to many excellent Bible verses for further study, reflection, and prayer.

Format: Hardcover
This was so enjoyable to read on 3 grounds:

1. John Osteen was so passionate about all people living a life of faith and this passion is so evident in his writing.
2. The book is drenched in Scripture, both Old and New Testament. He bases the book around Elijah, who James reminds us ("was a human just like us, ...") and how he prayed to have the rain stop for 3.5 years, then have it start again, in 1 Kings. Osteen also cites many examples of some really tough situations from his own life where he exercised faith.
3. It was easy to read, being uncomplicated with short sharp chapters whilst being very challenging.

I found I prayed constantly as I read it, using the many Scriptures provided, as in essence, being drenched in the Word, praying it and meditating on it, are real keys to living a life of faith.

There are some great sound bites in the book that are always good, for example, "You don't see your victory with your natural eyes, but with your spiritual eyes of faith." (p 153) as well as a number of lists which make this work very practical so the reader can start using the material in their own life.

Thoroughly recommend it, scoring it a 4.5.

John Osteen was a man of faith which the reader will see in this book. Becoming A Man of Unwavering Faith is a compilation of serman transcripts and previous writings with a foreword by his son, Joel Osteen. The late John Osteen talks to every man about the temptations and struggles each is sure to face in life. This would make a nice Father's Day gift. It is compact and can be carried easily for daily devotion or to a men's study group. (For the sake of disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from Hachette Book Group.)

Many men become convinced their destiny is to suffer pain, disease, troubles, anxieties, and defeat. It does not have to be so according John Osteen, the late founder of Lakewood Church, in his book A Man of Unwavering Faith.

He reminds men that the Bible says, “In this world you will have tribulations” (John 16:33). Nevertheless, a man of unwavering faith can face the challenges of life.

Throughout the book, Osteen points out the qualities and biblical examples of men of faith, especially Jabez and Elijah. Jabez, whose name means pain or distress, rejected this as his destiny for life. He cried out to the Lord for his protection, blessings, and to enlarge his territory. God granted his request (1 Chronicles 4:10).

Osteen challenges men today to take the same path, to rise up as men of faith and reject Satan’s lies of disease, anxiety, and defeat. He challenges them to use God’s promises sprinkled throughout the Bible to change their destiny. Such as, ask for anything in My name and I will do it (John 14:14) or God will supply all your needs according to His riches and glory (Phillippians 4:19).

He implores men to take God’s promises to Him to change their destinies. Moreover, he explains faith comes from hearing the Word of God and when you act on the Word, the power of God is released. Faith is believing God will do what He said He would do.

He holds up Elijah as an example of a man of faith in various parts of the book. Elijah read the covenant between God and the people of Israel, found they broke the covenant by worshipping Baal, a false God, and stood on the Word when he prayed to God to stop the rain from coming until the people turn back to Him. (Deuteronomy 11:13-17) In addition, God kept His Word.
