Well, first of all, I bought this CD a few months ago, which is titled '..on becoming a woman..' so I'm not sure why it's also released as 'Diva Blue Experience', suffice to say it's the same CD with all the same cuts. I really love this CD, so much so, that I've been listening to it everyday through headphones. Really funky, really soulful, awesome voice! I put this CD in much the same category as Ledisi's 'soulsinger', since they both ooze finesse, have fantastic musicians backing them, and both girls can sing their hearts out with a range that has to be heard to be believed. Alison is lessy jazzy than ledisi, and has her own unique, very powerful sound. There are about 3 tracks which have pre-programmed drums, and me being a drummer, I prefer live drums. Nevertheless, the CD is very well produced, so this is forgiveable. My favourite tracks are 'save me',(oh this track alone is worth the price of the CD, it's amazing!), 'when I think of you', 'you know what happens', 'oil and water'- which has a great live drum 'n bass/funk groove, 'like rain'( very powerful ballad), and 'alive'. I highly recommend this CD, especially to anyone reading this that likes Ledisi, jill scott, N'Dambi and that ilk of Neo-soul female artist who use live bands in the studio for the most part. You won't be disappointed!

Finally I found a non-import copy of this disc! I heard her remake of WHEN I THINK OF YOU and was glad to discover that she had an entire album out but the price caused me to put it on my wish list and pray for a price reduction. Luckily I finally found a non-import copy in a local record store.
As alternative r&b goes, this is a really good album as a whole -like most good music of this genre, live instrumentation combined with strong vocals make for great music! If you can find it stateside, I'd highly recommend it. My favorite tracks: SAVE ME, LIKE RAIN, YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS, CROSSROAD, OIL & WATER (love the funky drum beat) & a very ambitious remake but slowed down funky rendition of WHEN I THINK OF YOU.

Alison Crockett cd is very smooth, and refreshing without sounding repetitive. It is needed more in the music industry. I am a happy consumer with Alison's CD. The musicians are superb! Alison's background arrangements are on point with a twist of past. Alison's flexible vocals are indeed a pleasure. I can think of many artist when hearing her voice. She does not sound like one. She has similiar sounds to Carleen Anderson, Ledisi, Brand New Heavy to her own unique sound. Alison's voice with the funky soulful british vibe is a nice & delicate combination.

Alison Crockett - On Becoming a Woman (Sol Image, 2004)This album actually came out in 2003 but you know how most neosoul newcomers' albums are; they take a while to be picked up by mainstream (ask Mystic, Donnie, Ledisi, Hil St. Soul to name a few). While this album still hasn't hit a major label yet, Alison Crockett definitely needs to be discovered by one. "Save Me" kicks the album off right, followed by "When I Think of You", giving the Janet Jackson original a nice, neosoul touch. "Imgonnacome" is probably my favorite song right now (it changes every week). And if enjoying Crockett's voice isn't good enough, the production is another plus, especially the drum section. Like the previous reviewer, I'm also a drummer and I like the "fill-in's" on the first two songs. This is a great album. -EJR |
